someone please help me!
My Brazilian rainbow has mites, so tonight I decided to oil him up. I used olive oil. Then I started to squeeze the stupid mites out.
But I think my rainbow got oil in his nose. Please help me! Will he be ok???

Re: someone please help me!
He was breathing heavy, and not moving much, but now he's slithered a bit in his tank. Still breathing a little heavy though.
What do I do? Bathe him or let him deal? I'm so worried, he's only 3 months old and I've roughly had him 3 weeks. I can't lose him

Re: someone please help me!
I think your boa should be fine. Just keep an eye on her and try to rub her nose with a wet paper towel. That should get most of it off/out of her nostrils.
Go on google and search for "Nix mite treatment for snakes". There is a PDF article telling you what you should do to get rid of them. It works great and is safe for your snake.

Re: someone please help me!
If there is still oil on the body use CLEAR dial/softsoap: get a little bit in your hands, lather it up, and run your snake through it. It will get the oil off his body (but dont put it on his face/nostrils).

Re: someone please help me!
I wiped him down with a wet cloth before I put him back. When p was squeezing mites out of him, I swear there were at least 100
I just peaked into the zoo and saw him drinking out of his bowl.
2 days ago I sprayed with Pam and I'm waiting for some results. I had to do the whole collection

Re: someone please help me!
Seriously consider the Nix treatment. You will save yourself (and your snakes) alot of hardship. Mites are really hard to get rid of, and Nix is the only treatment I have used that works 100% of the time with immediate results.

Re: someone please help me!
Can you get nix in canada? Does anyone know? Cause he was infested badly. Probably about 100 and he's so young that I'm scared it might kill him. No one else has the mites (2 coulmbian boas, another Brazilian and a corn snake) but I did it just in case. He's no exploring his tank and drinking out of his bowl, will he be ok?

Re: someone please help me!
I DO know that you can order Nix on amazon. It is simply a lice shampoo (but that doesnt mean any lice shampoo will work). But if you mix 1 bottle with a gallon of distilled water, you can spray it directly onto your snakes and it kills the mites and their eggs.
You have an infestation on your hands: you should spray the snakes, throw away all used bedding, spray the carpet, drapes, and anything near the snakes.
I buy Nix at my local walmart, but some have found it in CVS pharmacies, Wallgreens, etc. I hope you have it around you: if not, you can order it online (just get it overnighted to you).

Re: someone please help me!
Thanks so much everyone. I should have known that this was going to happen with a new addition. But I saw no signs, no soaking and he always ate. My other snakes seem to have none, but precautions must be taken. I hate mites, and anything buggy. I just hope I can help him. So I can use nix on him? After this with oil, makes me think twice about putting stuff on snakes. Ugh I hate mites, last time I had them was almost 2 years ago.

Re: someone please help me!
Trust me: Nix is not going to hurt your snakes as long as you follow the instructions. It is safer than the oil. I even used it on 2 week old baby rosy boas with absolutely no ill effects.
I swear by this stuff!

Re: someone please help me!
Nix is the bomb, and you need to treat everything around for mites, including your whole collection in one shoot. It is just not worth it then, Mites are hard to get rid of.
Good luck to you, and get that Nix, it is cheep and it works better then anything else you can find.
Myself I have the PDF on both computers, and on a couple of hard drives.

Thanks everyone, I will do some searching for nix tomorrow. I think I'm getting a cold, so tomorrow it'll be. Thanks everyone again. If I run into problems I will definately be back to find out.

Re: someone please help me!
Hi everyone,
He's a lot more alert this morning.
I was looking around at nix here in canada, and it has 1% permiterin is that the right one? I don't really want to go through a scare like this again.

Re: someone please help me!
just out of curiosity, what damage does oil do to a snake, as I also did this silly mistake, following a silly care sheet that said use mineral oil, and had some terrible results.
thanks.

It effects the chemical they use to shed their skin (the one that makes them go opaque) and leads to a terrible shed, and possible dried out skin and such I believe.
Corneliusmom20: I used the Nix treatment before, yes it is the one with the 1% Permiterin in it, the smaller bottle. Now you just need to get ahold of a 4litre jug of distilled water and mix it in. It takes a while to mix, so you'll be standing there shaking it for a while until all the strings of the goop dissolve, but the mix and the treatment are totally worth it, IMO. It saved me from a lot of trouble when one of my new snakes came in with a minor infestation a while ago.
As far as your little rainbow, he's likely stressed out with a mite-infestation as bad as he had. For a 3-month old(?), that's a LOT of mites for a tiny little guy like him and it wouldn't surprise me if he'd got more under his scales that you can't see, so he's more than likely a bit anemic. Did he come to you this way? You should inform whomever you bought him from of this, beit a petstore or a breeder, so they can take the necessary precautions in their own animals..
What are you keeping the little guy in right now? If it's an enclosure with substrate, you might want to move him into a rubbermaid tub with paper-towel so you can monitor the mite-situation while you treat his enclosure. Treat him and the tub, and make sure you spray any carpet/flooring around his enclosure 'cuz that will snuff out any of the little buggers that might be spreading out looking for new hosts.
Once the treatment's done, make sure he's got lots of water, just don't leave the water in with him while you spray and put it back in after the spray's dried. I put it in the next day, myself, just to be sure.
Just another quick thing, too: Make sure if you spray the floor that you keep the other animals out of the room until the treatment's done. Hopefully your dogs aren't quite as moronic as my girl can be, but just to keep them from licking the solution off the floor when you treat around the cages.
