Disgusting

Well I went to a local petshop today where the owner is a friend of mine. We were talking and this guy said he breeds boas and told me to come over and see his setups and give him some advise on the snakes. Well lets just say that I was DISGUSTED! His enclosures look like a drill went nuts and the wood is cracking. ALL his animals are covered in feces and his cages are smeared with it too. 1/2 of his snakes had mites crawling on them. I mean you could see the buggers on the snakes. And he was supposedly breeding these animals. I spent 15 mins there and told him to clean it up and buy decent enclosures. All he had for substrate was the wood floor of the enclosure, no aspen or newspaper, nothing. Told him about the nix treatment and how decent aspen bedding may help with temps and humidity. I mean this guy needs them taken from him before they all are dead.
He had a really pretty female hypo and she is slim but not bad and I told him I wanted her but first he had to clean the crap up. I offered to give him some extra tanks for them and hopefully he calls.
It was really depressing the way he had them. I mean I feel bad when a poop goes unnoticed hidden behind a log or in a hide for a day his stuff was gross. Well he told me if I help him with the cleanup and help build new enclosures he would give me the hypo. I don't know if I can find the time but told him I'll try and see what I can do.

Sorry about the venting but this kinda stuff just tics me off.

My first question to you is what precautions did you take to make sure you don't bring mites home to your snakes?

This is very sad to hear. At least he seems to want your advice and wants to do what is right for the snakes.

IBD. mites.Bad news id tell him and stay on him to get them right but he can keep his hypo.And id just stay away from it all together.IBd gets carried through mites even if you keep the snake away from your collection 1 mite on your shirt could be the death of all your snakes.Its not worth it and you know his snakes are from any old clown down the street that dont know what IBD means. AHH !!lets see goerge ill. boa. dies

tat bad. makes me want to come pull a jack move and take some snakes home. im not ritch but they would be clean well fed and have a great env to live in

2) just look at setups

You burned your clothes?

I would have just washed them. The detergent is enough to make them sink and drown in the washing machine.

The situation sounds terrible, I hope the snakes are able to get some help somehow.

Common sense would be to clean up the enclosures and pull up the internet to see what you can do yourself 1st. Atleast he is asking for help. A lot more than you can say for other people in this world.

i would be afraid to touch any of his animals, cages or anything in his house

i hope he takes your advice and cleans everything up

but, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to think, hey, my animal went to the bathroom, maybe i should clean it up?

Yeah I actually burned the clothes I was wearing. I felt gross after being there.

Yeah he asked but it was too late for a few of his snakes. They died within 2 days of asking for help. It tics me off that he let it get that bad.

Yeah it was bad and he is cleaning it up. And he is not anywhere's near being a brite bulb on the x-mas tree.
