Equate Lice Shampoo?
I went to the store after hearing the miracles of NIX Lice Shampoo for dealing with mites, but couldn't find it anywhere on the shelves. I picked up the 'Equate' or store-brand lice shampoo, hoping that it would work the same.
I haven't used it yet, since I don't have the need to, but I wanted to have some on hand incase the situation arose.
Equate Lice Shampoo
Active Ingredients:
Piperonyl butoxide (4%)
Pyrethrum extract (equivalent to 0.33% pyrethrins)
Inactive Ingredients:
benzyl alcohol, C13-C14 isoparaffin, fragrance, polyoxyethylene (1, 1, 3, 3-tetramethyl butyl) phenyl ether, water, xanthan gum
NIX Lice Shampoo
Active Ingredients:
Permethrin (1%)
Inactive Ingredients:
Balsam Canada, Cetyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, FD&C Yellow #6, Fragrance, Hydrolyzed Animal Protein, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Polyoxyethylene 10 Cetyl Ether, Propylene Glycol, Stearalkonium Chloride, Water, Isopropyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben.
Thoughts?

Re: Equate Lice Shampoo?
You've already gotten my reply on this but NO, I wouldn't recommend it.
I wouldn't recommend using something that doesn't have the same active ingredients in it as Nix does.

Re: Equate Lice Shampoo?
Weird, cause I stopped by WalMart and couldn't find it. I'm going to try a few other places before I order it online.

Re: Equate Lice Shampoo?
Back when I got a batch of aspen with the white wood mites, I went to Wal-Mart and got the Repel Permanone, did the bedding treatment. It's active ingredient is Permethrin, same as Nix and 'Provent-a-Mite' (I hate the name of that stuff, lol, you'd think they'd look up 'prevent' before manufacturing ). It works great, and you can use it even if there are no mites, as a preventative measure. Costs about $4.

Re: Equate Lice Shampoo?
the reason they have it spelled Provent is because they are Pro-Products.com...Bob, the owner is very knowledgeable and a pioneer in this industry I wouldnt question his methods too much lol

I'm not questioning anyone's methods, lol, I just always thought the spelling was funny...makes sense now, I suppose.

Sounds great! Thanks for the recommendation.
Does it work on all kinds of substrate? I got out of aspen awhile ago, and am using EcoEarth/Jungle Bed for all my snakes.

Re: Equate Lice Shampoo?
I think you should be fine, I treated cypress, reptibark, and aspen with it. Just make sure to let it air out and dry thoroughly before adding to the cage.

That would be great. I'd always like to be able to recommend a similar product that works just as well incase someone can't find the brand name.

Re: Equate Lice Shampoo?
okay so I threw away the box by accident! But the product is -Lice Treatment with Permethrin lotion 1%. It has the same ingredients as NIX. Its a cheaper alternative, Brands like Equate occasionally have extra 'fluff' in them but have the same active ingredient. Use extreme caution when choosing Brand versus off- brand. This is a good bet for use.
Lice Treatment | Nix | Beauty & Spa | Walgreens
Something else that is very handy that I found in the same area is another Walgreens brand "Stop Lice step 3" labeled as in home lice spray. This stuff is awesome to spray around the floors to kill the little buggers that might have escaped.

The real differance between these two products is that Equate shampoo uses pyrethrins which is a natural pesticide and the nix shampoo is using permethrins which is a man made chemical both are effective in the getting rid of mites. Both chemicals work the same way.
