Riley - IBD?
Okay so I just got a call from Curtis, and he said he went home and was feeding the cats, and he checked in on all the snakes and Riley was on the cage floor, stretching up to get on his perch, and kept falling over.....and the way he described it it sounds like IBD. He wasn't able to easily right himself and just looked disoriented. I told him to move Kobi and Jezi out NOW and I called the vet. Kobi and Jezi are going in first for a blood tests and then Riley is going in.
.
I am really upset about this, and really confused. I have had Riley since February and I have never noticed ANYTHING wrong. Granted, I haven't bothered him much in the last week because he was in blue, but how fast does this usually hit? Is this something that I did wrong? Could he have had this when I got him almost a year ago and I'm just now seeing it? Can scrubs even get IBD? I didn't find anything on google specific to scrubs with IBD, just pythons in general.
.
Any thoughts?

Inclusion Body Disease
I hope it works out for you though. I hope he just lost his balance or something. I just hope it isn't IBD.

Re: Riley - IBD?
I have already read that. It doesn't say if its caused by something that I did wrong though. I can't concentrate good enough to understand all that right now.

Re: Riley - IBD?
It isn't cause by anything you did wrong trust me on that. It is a retro virus. Biggest thing that could have cause it to be transmitted to your snake would be mites or something to that extent.

Re: Riley - IBD?
Mites, from what I understand, can help spread IBD, but it was my understanding that IBD can actually be airborne as well, and sit dormant in a snake for a good long time.
Let us know what the vet says, I've got my fingers crossed for you, Kobi.

Re: Riley - IBD?
by the way... if it is ibd (which is speculation at this point) he could have had it when u got him...i have read that animals will usualy hide any illness or disabilities as long as possible because in the wild only the strong survive and if they show weakness they will be picked off...so maybe he has just been doing a good job of hiding it and now its so severe he cant hide it anymore
u need to get him to a vet though...i think alot of people jump to ibd when its usualy something else thats causing the symptoms

Re: Riley - IBD?
I called the vet as soon as I got off the phone with Curtis, before I got on here. They are all going first thing in the morning.
.
I am waiting on curtis to send me a video text of him.

Re: Riley - IBD?
I can only imagine what you are going through...IBD is one of those worst nightmares we all have as snake keepers...I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it's NOT IBD, and hopefully not anything at all...

Re: Riley - IBD?
I really hope that Curtis was just mistaken or taking it a little bit too seriously...I hope that everything works out, and that IBD is not the cause of whatever is going on...

Re: Riley - IBD?
From what I've always been told, IBD in pythons is an almost instant death sentence. If Riley had it in February when you got him, he'd have been dead way before now. Boas can be carriers, supposedly, but pythons get hit hard.
Being disoriented like that can be a symptom of many many different issues, IBD is just one of them. There are other things he could have that are entirely cureable and nowhere near as serious. Deep breaths, calm down, get through the day and go to the vet. Good luck, I really hope it's nothing serious!

Re: Riley - IBD?
Ahem, Riley was acting "disoriented" because he was beginning to shed! When I got home he was almost done. I took him out and he is just fine. I told Curtis that he is fine, and even though I wanted to strangle him, I know he was just concerned and to him Riley just didn't look right.....he's never seen Riley shed lol.
.
I feel really stupid right now, but I think Curtis feels stupid-er lol. I am sorry for making everyone worry, its hard to know what's going on at home when you're not there, and like everyone said, I thought worst case scenerio.
.
Thank you all for your concern about Riley, I really appreciate it!

Thank goodness! I'm so glad he's alright. IBD... and even just the threat of... is really scary to deal with. I am SO glad he's alright.

Me too, it was heartbreaking just thinking about losing him.
.
I made Curtis watch a youtube video of IBD so he would recognize the difference.
