ah well it finally happened after ten years of keepin reptiles i have mites. my ball pyhton had been soaking for a while a day now. well i pulled him out and found a freaking mite this mroning. so first things first the BP gets a mineral oil bath, and he loves it. i will leave him in there for a couple of hours well around 10 to be exact. i have thouroughly disinfected his cage and i am going to do the rest of the cages saturday evening. well anyways. i put a no pest strip above the cage so this should help out a lot as well. well wish me luck, i am going to battle with these things. any advice would be nice as well.

I know a lot of people like preventamite, and black night, but Lori told me about this stuff you get at Walmart that is pretty cheap. I used it on my baby burm, who was COVERED. she apparetnly had a few when I bought her that quickly greww to be hundreds.......lol. It is called Sawyer's tick repellant spray. Be sure you get the aerosol can. Remove the water bowl and snake from cage, and spray everything in cage, sides and hides and all, and hten cover it, so that it will stay inside for 1 hour. After an hour, remove covering and open cage, air out for 2 hours. Replace snake in cage. Lori said I may need to repeat it in 2 weeks, as it was a BAD infestation, but they were gone with the first treatment. Also I treated all my cages, since mites will just move from treated cage to an untreated one. Anyway, that's my .02. Good luck!

Sawyers tick spray and Proventamite are the same thing...the manufacturer sells the same thing to both of them and lets them label them with their name. The cans have identical patent numbers on them. The key ingredient is .5% permetherin ...Rid lice spray is even cheaper and is also the same thing....I am weird though....I would rather pay another buck or two for tick spray than to face a cashier with lice spray LOL. Whatever you do....Do not spray it ON the snake....just treat the cage. The mites that are on the snake will die shortly after returning to a treated cage. Also....If you have any frogs, turtles or pet bugs of any kind....remove them from the house....not the room....the HOUSE...this stuff is deadly to them and can travel enough through the ventilation to kill them even in another room.

depends on how much you spray and what the conditions in your house are that might either restrict or promote drying...usually anywhere from several minutes to an hour or so it is safe...just make sure everything has dried.

I always used mineral oil if needed for mites until about a year or so ago. Never had to deal with mites on anything larger than a 6'er till then. Here's the page I have on the mineral oil and mites..]MITES/MINERAL OILThat's when I started using the PAM. Not the same dealing with a HUGE 10'+ that has mited as a 3-6'er at all. Especially when doing the mineral oil treatment with them. Once I figured out what the PAM and the Sawyers were etc. I switched over to using the Sawyers on habitats of snakes that needed mite treatment.
