It's been a while since I've been on here. But I need some help. I just bought a very sick Ball Python. I'm hoping I can save him but I don't know. He's got a bad RI and I can't get him to the vet until the morning. I've got his temps up. Is there anything else I can do until I can get to the vet in the morning? He's got bubbles, gapeing, he's bad. But a good thing is he did eat but the kid has been dragging this snake around for I don't know how long. He's in an isulation tank since we do have 7 other snakes. I just can't sit and watch him die. The kid I bought him from didn't even have him a heat source of any kind. Thanks for any ideas.

Well,
all you can do until you take him to a vet is to keep him warm (90-92) and very very humid.
Give him a place to hide, and leave him alone as long as you can.
Good luck.
Hope he/she makes it.

very very humid? Come on frag...You know better than that. If the snake has a build up of mucous then high humidity will break it up too fast and he can't cough it up right away and will drown in his own funk. Best to keep him warm and dry...and as he gets better then expose him to short bursts of high humidity for a very short while at a time and let it break up slowly after a week or two of treatment. Sometimes there will be nothing to break up....that's great...after a couple of weeks if there are no symptoms you can boost the humidity back up and leave it. A Vet visit is still a good thing IF the vet is known to be experienced and good with herps. If your snake is less than a year old...don't be afraid to question the use of antibiotics. They will probably kill a very young snake so it's usually advised to just try and get rid of an RI with round the clock heat. Make sure he stays hydrated through this. He may need to soak in pedialyte or water every day for an hour or so to keep from drying out. Good luck.

My answer would be: An RI could degenerate to the point where it kills your snake. A bad shed, probably not so much. Treat the more serious condition (RI) and deal with the bad shed after it happens.

Holy old posts Batman! Wow, I haven't seen some of those names in years.
Wonder what ever became of the original snake?
