I just got Romeo out of his cage & he smells a little.. um.. funky. It's not overpowering, just a little musty really. He's been soaking a lot & his substrate gets wet (we change it every time it does) & subsequently he crawls in it & I think that's what the smell is. I was wondering if it was safe to give him a bath with a mild soap, like baby shampoo. Any and all advice would be appreciated.

I bathe several of my snakes when they get funky! I prefer the antibacterial dial it make's them smell pretty! But you can use it on them no problem's just dont get too close to the head.

Okay, thanks, that good to know...I'll go ahead & give him a quick bath & rinse him off extremely well...I went & got some baby shampoo because I figured that would be the least irritating to his skin. I wasn't planning on going anywhere near his head, just the middle part of his body or so & back, but thanks for the reminder. He'll be so fresh and clean, I just know he'll want to have his picture taken when I'm done, he's such a little ham!

I wash all my snakes in the dishwasher in Cascade. This is why none of my snakes have spots.

Hi,
What are you using for substrate, you may not be getting all the smelly stuff out when you
spot clean. Had the same problem .. cleaned the cage by spot cleaning stil had that musk.
Went to newspaper , someone plays in the water dish poops up a mess, and while he's in the mood he passes the pee rocks with a couple table spoons of really smell water.
SO I roll up da'funky sides paper and wipe the cage down with a damp paper towel and throw some more paper in the cage and run with the rolled up paper to the trash can before MRS ratsickle with the super powered nose smell's anything. I, I, I dont' smell a thinggy huneys...lol
whenI am done all you smell is clean newspaper.psps . that don't last long with 6 snakes... hehehe
doug
keeps mrs ratsickle off my arse.

I guess everyone has there substrate preferences...Newspaper seems to require more upkeep than any other...water spills are a several times a day event. It doesn't provide burrowing opportunity and it looks bad. Shrug...I use different things for different snakes. I use newspaper sometimes for quarantined or snakes with skin conditions such as scale rot etc...I can't imagine the #$%^$%^$%^$%^& of keeping newspaper fresh for 50+ snakes though. I'd go nuts...or nutser anyway. I have used pretty much everything there is to use...lately I have been using cypress mulch right from the garden center...at 2 bucks for a bag I can barely carry...I can't beat it. Snakes love it, it spot cleans easy and has a woodsy odor to it already so it kinda freshens the air. It looks good. It holds humidity well...Only problem is as with any wood chip/mulch product...there is a risk of introducing parasites. So...I spray permetherin spray (proventamite, Rid, Sawyers tick spray etc) into every new bag before I even use it. Everysnake I have that isn't strictly arboreal loves to burrow...I just can't take that away from them.
