A lot of you probably know about this , I just learned
of this occuring.
Apparently the injection of undiluted baytril can leave quite
serious scarring. For those not in the know about this, it would
probably be wise to make sure your vet dilutes any baytril shots
given to your animals.
For those who have had experience w/ this does the scarring eventually
fade with time???

Actually it does this on a lot of animals, not just snakes.
Most of the time it will heal with not to noticable effects as long as it is treated properly with neosporin, to keep the bad stuff out of the area.
As for snakes, some prefer shots, some prefer other ways to get the medicine in.
For me, I have had some good results with orally administering the medicine with cath tubes.
What I try to do is give the meds on an empty stomach so there will be more absorption.

Does anyone have any pics of the scarring? I've heard of this happening, but have never actully seen it. I've givin 100% undiluted baytrill to a few different snakes and have never seen scarring. Mabye the scarring occurs more with the more potent version of baytrill. Anyone know if this is the case? -Juggalo

Not my animal Ritchie,
Learned of this through an Aus. herp club I subscribe to
via e-mail .
Apparently the animal was given a course from a vet using diluted,
no scarring .A second course was given to same animal different vet(??)
using undiluted and it left rather bad scarring which actually appeared
worse after the next shed.
In, reply some one else related a similar experience.
Thanks for those tips ,Eddie will keep that in mind if ,god forbid ,
my animals ever need treatment.

Hmm I think the same way here even as you ritchie. I have as yet to run into any scars coming about from Baytril injection[s] myself either.
Are you guys giving the shots just a bit subcutaneous or are ya going deeper into a muscular injection with the Baytril ? AND Do you notice any difference in that one way promotes the scars at all then ?

I can't even begin to count the snakes I have given Baytril to...Only one has ever scarred from the shots but I doubt it had anything to do with the drug itsself. The snake is a Labrynith Burm that I brought in on rescue last year with a bad Lower RI. I have to have someone sit on the snake to give him injections because he bucks like a wild bronco as soon as the needle breaks skin. He bent several needles over the course of his treatment and as a result had a few scabbed over sores that healed up after a few sheds.

Sounds like a reasonable assumption (not deep enough),as two
different vets gave treatment w/ possibly two different techniques.
Thanks guys.

Amikacin has been found to cause extensive damage to either snake kidneys or liver...I forget which....Neither is a good thing though. The main thing is...NEVER use either on a snake under one year of age unless as a last ditch effort to save a life. Most antibitotics cause dehydration and to a baby snake it is usually so bad that it is fatal.
