Bearded dragon:foreign object in eye

Hi Everyone,

Although I have never posted to this forum, I have been lurking on and off for quite some time. The day has come where I need some advice.

My 10-year-old bearded dragon seems to have hurt his eye the other day. Without thinking, I turned the ambient room temperature up to about 26 degrees, and brought him out of his brumation period and driving him nuts. In all of his excitement I think he ran through his water dish, then rolled in the sand, and got some in his eye.

The first day he didn’t seem to be able to open his eye, so I cleaned it out with a saline solution, and decided to use a light medication of Polysporin Eye/Ear drops. This seems to have helped slightly, and after a couple of days he is able to open his eye for short periods, and almost all of the swelling has gone down.

My question is, does anyone have any further advice? I have never been able to find a decent reptile vet in town, and am not so sure they would be able to help me anyways.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Sounds like you have it under control. A vet visit would be best, they might give you some ocular ointment or something, but if you can't....

Thanks for the suggestion; although I have been unable to locate a good reptile vet. A good friend of mine is a people doctor, and she has been able to provide some insight, and I also spoke with my optomotrist, and neither can think of anything else that can be done with over-the counter meds.

I think I am going to go purchase one of those no-light heat bulbs this morning. Maybe it will help ease his eye - I know how much it hurts to be in the light with a sore eye!
