Ed I've used this stuff with no ill effect's to any of my animal's! I do strongly advise, not to use it on very young reptile's! I have heard on occasion that it has caused some snake's to convulse but I've never seen it for myself!? I do know one thing it will knock out any mite's or tick's that are on the snake!! Also after using it my wife can alway's tell we have bug's come out of the wood work and die in the middle of the floor!! Hehe! It will do in spider's, roach's ant's, you name it!!! Really the best stuff I've used!!!

I'd be a little weary to try roach spray. I wouldn't want to use anything that I can't consider too safe for myself or the cats. It seems to be powerful enough that, if used, will kill insects outside of the cage as well as those inside. Plus shad said that it has caused some snakes to convulse. I wouldn't want to take that risk.
Now, to be honest, I'm not the one who cleans the reptile cages (I'm the cleaner of the cats), but I do participate in the purchasing of the materials and have spent plenty of time looking at the options.

A little backgrong history on Black Kinght here. Black Knight was designed for the airline's industry year's ago to stop the infestation of fruit flies (not sure what type) into the US. The flight attendant's would walk down the center of the aircraft with a can in each hand and spray it into the air and on passenger's and for year's people just thought it was an air freshner!

Inert means it's chemically unreactive, so I guess that means you can mix any other chemicals with it and it will still be phenothrin...that's scary, b/c you know they're gonna throw the cheapest chemicals they have in there with it if it won't react with them..

Yes!
If using one of the sprays like Provent-a-mite, you do NOT want to get any on your animals, it will KILL them!
With those types, you treat the cage minus the animals and water bowl.
After a few hours when it is all dried up, then you can replace the animals back in the cage along with their water bowl.

Hello everyone! I'v been following RTB for several months now, but have never posted, so thought that I would use this opportunity to introduce myself to one and all!
My first boa became infested with mites after I introduced an aspen substrate to her tank. Several weeks after adding the aspen, I noticed the little *ahem* Buggers under her scales and on my skin when I handled her. I called in to where I had purchased her, and they had me bring her back on three occasions for a 'treatment'. I think they sprayed something directly on her, but unfortunately that was before I had read up on mite treatments. (I have since done extensive research and reading about boas, and know much more than I ever thought I needed to learn to keep boas.) I removed all wood from her tank and put down newspaper, soaked her water bowl and accessories in steaming hot, soapy water, and sanitized the tank completely. Two months later, she still had mites, and a very plain cage. I took her to the vet and he has given her injections on two different occasions, with a third scheduled and in the past few weeks I haven't seen a single mite, and have also completely sanitized her tank again to kill/remove any mite eggs. On the advice of the vet, I baked all of her wood, including the aspen substrate, in the oven on 350. Things are looking great... she is healthy again, her tank appears to be mite free... YAY!!!
Anyways (i'm not always so long winded)... the moral of my story is this... ALWAYS bake a wood substrate (and all wooden accessories) before putting it into any animal's enclosure. It will save HUGE headaches!!
