ok, my wife just woke me up "The Living room is on fire"! apparatntly, the night light, heat fixture shorted and went up in flames.
We cought it very fast and no dammage was done. (except for a near heart attack... and a very melted switch)
Should the snakes be ok? I'm worried about the fumes. should I do anything special? I left a big overhead fan on to vent the room out, but I'm also a bit worried about the sudden temp. drop.
what do I do?

Really not a lot you can do. If possible move the snake out of the room until you are sure of the fumes being gome. As for heat if you have a heat pad people type you can put that on the medium setting and place it under one end of the tank. I don't trust lights for night time heat or daytime unsupervised heat as I've seen them melt or short out to often. Sorry I can't tell you more just keep an eye on the snake for about a week or so. If anything seems out of the ordinary see a qualified vet.

Hey, my place almost caught fire this weekend too! I'll tell you one thing: 9 HOURS AT 325 DEGREES IN THE OVEN IS WAAAAAAAAAAY TOO MUCH FOR CYPRESS MULCH!!!!! . I had so much going on on satruday I forgot about it . I did remember to take it out of the oven before I went to bed though. it looked darker than normal, but not chared! I woke up to an appartment FULL of smoke. The mulch wasn't on fire, but it was smoldering. I consider myself, and my animals very lucky. my place reeks of cypress mulch burning smell now. any tips on getting that smeel outta my couch, and....well.....everything else I own? thanks guys, I guess I'll just cross my fingers then. Does this really happen often with heat lights? I wasn't aware of that.

Hey jug,
You can sterilize most wood products at your ovens lowest setting. Anywhere around 200F is going to kill just about anything you need to be worried about. Just food for thought.

Thanks . I have heard that from most people, but I thought heck, what's an extra 125 degrees lol?? I'm just such a herptocondriac. Always worried my guys are going to get sick, I over do it sometimes
Say, Seany, what kind of heat fixture was it? was it like a plastic/metal one or a ceramic?

Juggalo, MAN, one word: Febreeze!
Seany, I haven't had trouble with CHE's and as long as you put them in a CERAMIC fixture and use a thermostat or rheostat, things should be fine. I've noticed the heat lamps/light bulbs get way too hot, so I've switched over to regular 40 watt light bulbs for 'daylight' instead of heat. Hope your babies are ok!!

Actually 160 degrees is enough to kill bacteria, but who's got an oven with setting that low?
good thing y'all caught that fire in time...count your blessings

Seany.. Like the others have said. Just keep them OUT of that room for awhile [ this reduces the amount of DIRECT contact with any smoke/fumes in the room]. Any problems show..Vet ASAP.
JUG... We're always saying 200-250 degrees on the mulch. Overcompensation can really turn out to be a problem in the long run Like Ldy said though... FEBREZE does wonders I just wouldn't let the reptiles come into direct contact with it at all though. When spraying it...cover the vents up of the cages for a bit so as to demote any penetration of the stuff into them.

I didn't really see a need for keeping this post in "Trading Post" since nothing is for sale or trade...sounded more like a health issue to me.

One more pointer on this issue.....
If this happens to you TURN YOUR AC OFF!!! (but make sure to compensate with your enclosures, if it's hotter in your house, it's hotter in your herp cages!) I came home this morning after going to work, to a very warm house, and an AC unit making funny noises, and producing on cool air. on further inspection of the unit I found the filter (that was brand new 3 days ago) saturated in orange sticky stuff, and frozen to the intake by about 3mm of ice! I used a hair dryer to melt the ice, and turned the unit back on, 10 min. later the ice was starting to form again. DANG! I turned off all my herps heating sources since the abbient in my place was now about mid 80's, and went to sleep (I work at night) when I woke up I tried the AC agin, and it's working like a champ now! *whew* -Juggalo
