I have just purchased a large female BCI. She is opening and closing her mouth a lot. She makes a noise that is similar to a hiss when doing this. It seems unusual. She is breathing loudly at times. Any suggestions?
She just gave birth to 28 babies about 1 1/2 weeks ago...

Hi Todd, welcome to RTB!
I am a relatively new snake owner, we have a 8 month old RTB who just about a month ago exhibited similar symptoms to what your snake is going through. He was making popping noises as well as the constant "yawning". After asking alot of questions & getting some great feedback from everyone on this site, it was concluded that he may have a RI, so we took him to the vet. He ended up having one. Here is a link to the forum we posted in if you want to take a look, I hope it helps. I'm sure others will be by soon to lend their expertise.

Hello,
You should take a close look at your boas mouth and look for any sort of cheezy substance, that could be mouth rot. Otherwise the heavy breathing could be due to a Respitory Infection like Celtic stated earlier. If you take a look to the left bar of this site you will see Carsheets under the Special Sections..click on that and goto the caresheets on boas. They should help you diagnose your problem. Keep us informed if you have anymore problems.

Also..to go along with what has already been said.. Have you noticed your boa getting ready to shed? If so the old skin could be blocking the nostrils which when it sheds it should uncover them and your snake will be back to breathing normal again.

I've noticed that the larger boids breath heavily once they get to the 'adult' size. You say she is large, so it may not necessarily be a RI, could just be her weight.....mine does the same thing and she 'yawns' quite a bit as well, yet I know she's healthy (we treated for a few probs when she came into my possession in Jan. and she is all better now). As was already stated, if there is excess mucous, bubbles coming out of the nose or popping noises when she breathes (when at rest, not moving about) then you may have to treat for RI. Good luck, I hope all is well with her!!

This post is locked since it was a double post with replies on both....
I also moved the other one to this forum as well.
But just to make it easy, everyone post On the other one.
