hello everybody! I had Zeus (1.0 bci) shipped to me from denver to florida about 4-4.5 monthes ago. when he got here he was ice cold, I know it was cold in denver the day he was shipped. about two monthes before he was shipped he escaped from his enclosure. he was gone for a month and a half! between the two recent events somewhere he developed a respitory infection . I had a suspition, so I took him to the vet today, and sure enough! now I gotta give him a shot everyday for a week. anyway, while I was there I decided to bring Hera in for a checkup. I aquired Hera about 6 monthes ago, and was told it was a female! HE in fact is a a male! dang it! so it's no longer zeus and hera, now it's zeus, and
je-sus'. -Juggalo

Zues and Je-sus!
Cool names, hehe, good thing you found out now, instead of after ya tried to breed them!
Male + male = no babies, but I know you know that already, hehe!
The only question I have is, if you have already had Zues for 4 1/2 months, why didn't you catch the RI sooner?
Or is it a recent development?
If it is recent, then I don't see how he could have it for that long without croaking.
Or was the 4 1/2 months a typo?
Anyway, along with the shots, ya got the temps up too?
( I am currently treating for RI in several of mine. Developed in a week after power loss during a weekend away from home....Came back to find cold whistling snakes.. AGGGHHHH!))

the 4 1/2 monthes is right, right when I got him here he was wheezin' a little, but mouth was dry. then a week ago he started a wheezin' again. he flicked his tonge a couple times, white mucus! yep, RI. mouth was really wet too. I hope he diddn't have it the whole time! he wasn't showin' any signs, and I checked a couple of times cause of the initial wheezin'. he's been eating fine, very active, very alert, so I wasn't worried until I heard the wheeezin' again. but I don't understand!? could it have been there, but just so minor that he wasn't shoin' signs until now? 'cause the only stress and cold he's had is his jailbrak at my sisters house, and the plane ride. by the way, zues was my first snake, I got him when I was a wee lad in colorado springs, then I moved here to FL. and my sister took care of him for a couple years. I just want em' to get better soon!, yeah, I got temps up to 87ambient 90 basking 82 cool spot. -Juggalo

Hey Juggal,
How's the snake responding to the meds?
I was thinking, if you had the temps normal to high and the humids down, it may have kept the illness slowed down to be long in the running with out major symptoms, but just the ramblings of a thought going insane.....

The vet perscribed 50cc a day for one week. I cant remember the exact name of the meds! It's at my house (I'm at work) I'll post it tomorrow.anyway, zeus is doin' great, he's also in his shed cycle, what a good boy! gettin' stuck with a with a needle everyday while he can't see anything, and very tolerant of the whole situation . today was his last shot, I'm bringin' him to the vet in the mornin' for a follow up. I hope your vet diddn't over-do it, I've heard of horror stories where the vet perscribes to much and the snake dies from kidney failure . I was really worried about that, but dr.Collati is great!! -Juggalo

I Would Be Intrested In The Name Of The Meds. Could You Post If You Remember? I Think My Wc Suri Male Is Having A Similar Problem. You Can Hear Him Periodically Let Out A Small Amount Of Air Sounding Like A Leak In A Tire. Very Faint. No Mucus Or Bubbling Of Nostrils.

While I agree that over the counter meds can be good for some things, RI would not be one. ANtibiotics have to be calculated by weight, and the doses must be spot-on to prevent a serious risk of kidney damage. If you suspect RI, a vet visit is a must to get an accurate weight and dosage.

Ri
I just came home from a week vacation and my boa appears to be weezing, but he ate just fine today. I was wondering if this could possibly get better on its own or if I should go to a vet right away. thanks

For future reference, you can open a new thread.
If you suspect an RI, raise your temperatures maybe 3-4 degrees on both sides, and lower the humidity to around 30% for a few days to a week. Make sure they have access to fresh water, as well. A vet visit isn't needed, and if you raise the temperatures and lower the humidity, it should clear up rather nicely.

I agree with that..Temps should be 90-92 and humidity 30-40%. Keep it that way untill all signs of respiratory are gone. Watch the snake and your temps/humidity for signs of a recurrence..If it keeps up or doesnt get better, call the vet.
