I wasn't real sure where to put this, it's not exactly a FAQ and I don't really need help, just a silly question. Are snake mites native to the US, or were they brought in from another country? Anybody know? Don't ask me why I even thought of this, but now that I have it's going to bug me til I find out.

Mites are all over the place. Allot of animals do come in with mites. But also allot come from your local area, yeard, wood piles , tall grass. When I got my first snake I went to a huge wood chip pile to get all this bedding (no I dont do it anymore) and instantly got mites. So you can get them anywhere.

I have even seen little red looking mites living on concrete.
Funny looking things so I am not too sure if it was mites or something else.
But yes, mites are everywhere all over the world, even in your own home and possibly on you.

Their are over 50,000 described (estimates are that there are over half a million) species of mite in the world. They inhabit every corner of the globe (funny, sense globes have no corners) , with the exception of the extreme polar regions. Of these 50,000 , 250 are known to be parasitic to reptiles. Mainly non-aquatic squamates (lizards, snakes, and amphisbaenians) are effected. However there are aquatic mites, but i am unaware as to whether or not any of them have reptilian hosts.

Mites are us.

Entropy,
Alex

Inother word, i believe it safe to assume that yes, there are, and probably were, reptile mites that can and do infest snakes native to the region known as "The United States".
I kinda find it funny when people mention geographical locations as a political border, rather than a naturally existing one.
Also, Ophionyssus sp. (snake mites), will infest lizards, andHirstielia sp. (lizard mites) will infest snakes.

Entropy and bloody drinks,
Alex

mmm, yummy
Actually, they are pretty interesting little devils, but I would rather study them in a controled atmosphere than on me or mine.

I do have some old bathing scrubbies, as well as used towels, combs, razors, etc.
What's your address?
