So, there's this burm....
On CL.
The guy is moving next week, and needs it gone by then. I sent him a tentative e-mail about possibly being interested maybe. Told him a bit about the snakes I already have, and a bit about what I know about burms.
Now here's the big question.
Do I want a burm? Like, really? I think I do. And if I get it I'm not going to "re-home" it because it got "too big" or I'm "tired" of it or anything.
It just kinda ticks me off, this guy... he says that he's feeding it twice a week, large rats. It lives in his closet, and has free roam of his room and it "just sleeps on my bed all day".
Arrrgh....
I told him I had no interest in -paying- for it, and described why. (The initial vet bill, the cost of equipment, and the cost of the cage I would be building for it, all told, over 250$ when he wants $125 for the snake, when burms only cost about $30 anyhow)
So chances are it won't even happen.
But... I DO love burms... And I'm sure I can squeeze another cage in here, right fellas? I know how to properly care for them, I've had one before. This one is still on the small side(big enough to fit in a cat carrier) so a long way to go yet. I know very well how big they get and how fast. I do have a supplier for food.
I suppose I'm just having issues finding why I should NOT get it. *rubs chin thoughtfully*
So, I'm posting. Any input?

Re: So, there's this burm....
I think this is one of those things where if you really want one, you'll know it. If you feel uneasy about it, you should wait. It's a huge commitment and you should wait until you're absolutely sure...IMO. It's also an animal that I would want to see and handle before buying, and it would be really nice to get one from a trusted breeder. Rescuing is cool, but it brings a few new risks.

Re: So, there's this burm....
Well, I'm not "uneasy" about anything more than "How the heck do I get this into my room without passing the "Oh mija!" stage from dad???"
The guy doesn't seem like an idiot, he just feeds too often. I saw a pic, and the snake looks healthy. Of course I will want to see the snake and handle it first. Aggressiveness or ill-health and I wouldn't get it.
You are right though... Well, I don't think he'll go for "giving" the snake away anyhow. If he does would be hella awesome, but yeah, I don't think he's the type.

Don't pay for a rescue. You are helping him. It shouldn't cost you money up front.

Re: So, there's this burm....
The Poop,...my god the poop. If you're looking for reasons not to get a large snake, this is a big one in my opinion. I had always heard about how bad it was when large snakes take a dump, and you have to clean it up, but once I was the one doing it?..It's alot more trouble then just grabbing a big turd and wiping up, they seem to like smearing it ALL OVER the cage. So if you feel that you are ready for a burm in all other aspects, as well as the poop, then I say go for it but don't pay for a rescue, Ranger's right.

Re: So, there's this burm....
No, I am NOT going to pay for it. I just called her and told her straight, I don't pay for second-hand animals. But that if she DID decide to home him with me, he would be assured a quality and fulfilling life until the end of his days.
Well, darn it I'm kind of excited now. I'll find out by Friday whether or not he's mine. lol
She doesn't say how big he is, but that he's eating live rats, twice a week. *twitch* Live. *twitch*
