probably waited too long

i always wanted to own a giant. ive always lovesd snakes. even as a little kid i had snakes. even today at 45 my head tells me to get one. i almost bought a burm about 3 weeks ago but opted for a suriname. i also have a bci. i am in the process of buying a house in ontario just outside a small town where it is more affordable with a little bit of land. i plan to turn the basement into a small zoo. the urge to buy a giant is really gnawing at me. every now and then i look at the pros and cons. what it comes down to is the snake will probably outlive me. lol.some days my head does cartwheels because the desire to own one is very strong. common sense tells me i dont have enough experience and i would have to take care of it almost single handed. for me anyways it would be selfish to the snake to get one. thanks for listening to my frustrations. i will just have to obey my common sense.

Re: probably waited too long

LOL, I feel funny saying this but, Youngster you gotta go with your gut. If you want something and can do it proper you need to go for it. Yes a Giant Species, or any species, may outlive you but that means you need to make arrangements for their future after you pass, which the odds say will be quite some time from now.
I do Box Turtle rescues and will not adopt out the females. I know for sure that most if not all of them will still be alive when I pass in the next 10 years or so but I have a young wife I am bringing along and with any luck whoever she marries or partners up with after me will also be willing to help out. But I will not care since I will be in the process of becoming chemicals.
To cut it short, you have to live your life doing as much as you can that makes you happy. You cannot live your life worrying what is going to happen when you are gone.
Just my humble opinion.

Ditto that.

Life is short. Well, at least it seems to me anyway as time has been speeding up for me ever since I graduated from middleschool, highschool and now a junior in college. lol

Usually when I have the opportunity to do something that makes me happy, I take advantage of that.

Re: probably waited too long

The irony is that many younger people who get burms end up giving them up for various reasons anyway. You could always adopt an older adult, one that an overzealous young kid gave up. However, if you will not have help caring for it, then you are being wise. Maybe you could volunteer somewhere that rescues them.

Re: probably waited too long

I wouldn't let your age influence whether or not to get a large snake. Every single person who is caring for a large boid hasa chance of passing on before the snake, Thats just life.
I think its a good idea to get a giant. From what i read, you are well prepared.
First off, you will be capable of providing it with the space it requires. Second, your older and wiser, and have learned how to take care of different reptile species. Thirdly, you will be settled into a home, so you won't have to worry about moving.
Get a giant. If it out lives you, get a family member to track me down, i'll be happy to take it

Re: probably waited too long

I think about my snakes outliving me too. I actually put them in my will. They are willed to SleepyFF if anything happens to me, andI left her provisions for shipping them out to CA. I think she would take great care of them. You could do the same thing with someone from RTB. I'm more concerned that you won't have anyone to help you handle a large snake. That is something to think about.
