I actually heard rumor that they already had, and somehow succeeded apparently, though it might've just been a wierd-looking morph there was a thread on here, or somewhere else, that had a picture of a Ballburm.. it's sad, really... what some people do to exploit these animals for profit and personal gain. That of which is what it usually is..

Re: Borneo bat eater
WOW...i had seen posts on other places that said they were trying to make the burmball, but i havent really ever seen one.any idea on their adult size? im assuming they crossed a small male burm with a large adult female? thats a really sweet looking snake. also i was under the impression that the sterility of the bateaters went down dramatically after the first generation.?.?
btw snake collector, i believe bob clark produces them on a regular basis but am not entirely sure as i only bought a few snakes from him awhile ago.

Re: Borneo bat eater
Looking at that site where that burmball picture was taken from.. it DOES look awesome, but how the bleeding holler do the two mate? The only thing I can think of is some form of luck, and/or Artificial insemination.
It's funny there's no pictures of the breeding process. The guy's got plenty of pics of his burm, but nothing of the ball that was used, or how it came about.

Re: Borneo bat eater
It saddens me that people are not happy with the beautiful patterns and size of reptiles naturally. That genetic rarities are the only attraction to the wonderful world of reptiles. They are becoming the dogs of the reptile world. What a sad day.
Would anyone hear go to a fertilization donor clinic and asked for for albino traits for their human children? What about picking the eye color or traits?

If you would not do it to your own species please don't do it to others.

Re: Borneo bat eater
I agree with that Raze. As neat as some of those hybrids look, you wouldn't see one in my home. Natural occuring morphs are neat, like that one that Steve Jor's got in Classifieds right now.. the reduced pattern and lighter-than-normal coloration is awesome! It's a wild-caught specimen too, isn't it? I can't remember, but I do remember him mentioning it was a natural alteration in color. It's a neat snake, either way.

Re: Borneo bat eater
No I am not looking at it wrong. I am looking at it as a material possession for the owners selfish wants. Like a car with leather seats. I want my children to be natural not pre designed as I did my pets. I would rather own a wolf than a dog, but since dogs are flooding shelters, I will adopt one as we did our cat, our savanna monitor, and our black throat. I don't care how pretty they are I care about the animal. The reason we bought the tiger retic was because we thought they were natural and the price was as much as an adoption fee.
Unlike cars lives are not inanimate objects and rearranging genetic codes for looks instead of, to cure diseases is not o.k. in my book.

Don't you go feeling horrible about your gorgeous snake! The snake could care less. Just enjoy him and take good care of him, that's all.

Re: Borneo bat eater
Aren't most morphs imported? Like they find a nice snake that is unusual and a breeder buys it. They try to prove the genetics and it ends up in the market.

Re: Borneo bat eater
Now I was under the impression that the Tiger Retic was a CoDom trait. I have never heard it being a hybrid. The breeding records I have seen indicate that "tiger" it is a genetic trait.

Re: Borneo bat eater
I'll just chime in here for a sec... Tigers are naturally occuring, the first male Tiger did come from the wild and was bred in captivity, and was later proven a Co-Dom trait. Just like a lot of the other traits, almost all of them occur in the wild and are brought into captivity and then bred, like brownsfan222 asked.
While I'm not one to produce hybrids, and I really dislike the fact that some of them come from peoples accidental housing of two different species together and didn't realize their low temps were cycling the snakes, and then tried making a lot of $ on them, I still feel that these are living creatures that deserve just as much chance at life as anything else. And there is nothing sad about them, they have all ate, fed, and most have even bred fine, I see nothing flawed about these snakes, aside from having different parents (if you can call that a flaw in the offspring?)
I do own a Jungle Retic which is a Bateater bred back to a Retic. Am I ashamed of owning it? Heck no. I love that girl, it's hard not to stare as I walk by. And yeah, I'm going to try and breed her, because I'm dying to see what her offspring are like, pretty sure that would make the offspring 100% Retic statistically speaking though. Note: Both Male and Female Bateaters have been proven fertile as of now as well for those wondering.
Also, I do agree that there are plenty of naturally occuring traits and snakes out there to breed, and exclude Hybrids. But people will do what they want with their snakes, and produce what they want, it's not my place to tell them not to. But Hybrid boas and pythons will not flood any sort of market, they are overall too hard to produce, and not everyone is willing to spend money on them, and also, its obvious, not everyone agrees with it.
Just a couple thoughts on it. I don't have any burms to cross a retic to, nor would I do it in the first place, I enjoy my retic x retic breedings enough to keep me satisfied. But do I think Bats are some killer looking snakes? Yep.
