Ideas
They are looking into new laws. It would affect the bigger snakes. You would have to buy a lisc for 100.00 and also have the snake chipped so they could track it back to you. It is still in talks. Nothing definate yet. But I am sure the way they are running it they will have their way.

sounds like a good idea to me. Hopefully it will happen and catch on around the country. Far too many are showing up as unwanted and turned out into an enviroment that can not support them.

What we need is a place to turn in unwanted snakes. Not open ended laws that give to much power to a goverment agency that has shown problems with limits in the past.

That’s one way to look at it. Another would be more stringent requirements by the breeder/retailer of these snakes to acquire one from them. But that would mean responsiblity on behalf of them. That would also mean that they would not sell one to just any kid walking into a pet store looking for a cute LITTLE snake to take home. The problem with people today is that NO ONE looks ahead into the future. They just say "Hey I want this "pet" today". So if the seller would maybe raise the prices of them and require the buyer to research the animal prior to purchase, it may help eliminate SOME of the problem.
What about a registry? If you buy or sell it documentation and paper work would follow the animal and the buyer throughout it's life. This could go hand in hand with the micro-chip program too.

AAAhhhhh kitties
I always loved that idea. I am not saying that it is okay to release snakes. The plain fact is that the open ended way they are trying to legislate. First they go for the burms. Than they try to limit all snakes over a certain length.
I have a bigger issue with cats running free decimating the bird and lizard population. Or we could also look at how us humans have destroyed the everglades. When we dumped fish into the canals to clear them or released toads into the fields to eat some bug. We need a place where these snakes can be turned in. I worked for an Animal control. We used to get animals in all the time with chips. Their owners said they sold them or they ran away and they didn't want them. And if that chip is not registered properly by the new owner wouldn't it track back to the breeder. I am always for more education and less laws.

While we are on the topic, this is what Indiana is doing: Senate Bill 0482
They want to ban anything that has the potential to reach over 6'

eesh seems like MANY areas are doing that, I read that a city in Iowa had seized a couple of Rosy Boas because they were "dangerous snakes".

The bigger picture
Any law that limits your rights to own an animal is wrong. If you have broken a law than I think you need to face the law. But to pass a law which is open ended is a complete ban waiting to happen. The way the new laws are being devised. Fwc would not have to go before senate to limit or add other animals. They would be the sole guide as to the animals added to this list. That totally bypasses the checks and balances set up by the government. This is similar to what Miami Dade did with Pit bulls. Everyone thought ohhh its just pit bulls till that started to get rid of other dogs. They started judging what dog was a pitbull or pitbull mix and than they started fining the owner $500.00 per day till they got rid of the dog. Many of those dogs ended up in our shelter looking for new homes. There is no easy answer, but it makes me wonder where this is all headed. If they go to a size ban anything over 8 feet. Than we would start worrying about boas, blackheads and the like.
