It wasn't that his heart valves weren't working. He had some sort of a bacterial infection in his heart. The bacteria built up around the valves and formed a plaque. It eventually built up so thick it caused heart failure. I'm guessing that if we had drawn some blood this would have been caught since he takes the blood from the heart. I imagine he would have seen the elevated bacteria levels in the blood and put the snake on an antibiotic. I dunno.
