Help New Leopard Gecko

I got home from work the other day, and as I walked into my apartment building a guy comes out and asks me if I could take his leopard gecko (I had a few past interactions with him). I didn't really want another pet, but he went on to tell me his wife just left with the kids and called the cops on him for stuff he didn't do and on, so I agreed to take Sampson for him.
I read through a few care sheets and found this one to be the most detailed: CelebrityGeckos. I have some questions though and will post some pictures.

1. Is bed-a-beast (coconut fiber) OK to use as substrate?

2. Are meal worms good as feeders? The guy at the local pet store told me they're worthless for leopard geckos although a few care sheets said they're good feeders (gutloaded & dusted). Pet-store guy said crickets are best for leo's. (I forgot to check if they even carry meal worms)

3. Some care sheets talked about having a dish of calcium available for the gecko to lick, others said vitamins. Should calcium, vitamin, or both be offered on a dish?

I think he is at least a year old, beyond that I have no idea 'nor does the previous owner. He is 7" from head to tip of tail.

Lastly, does Sampson appear unhealthy? One of the toes on his front leg looks like it's missing the second half of it .

You can see the toe that is injured:

Re: New Leopard Gecko

Congratulations on the new monster.

He looks fine. The toe probably had restricted blood flow after a shed and fell off. The color looks good.

I've never used coconut fiber as a substrate for leos. Paper towels work great and they'll help you monitor his poop. It would be good in a humid hide, though, or you can use more paper towels or moss.

Crickets are much better than meal worms. Small roaches are great if you can get them, too.

When I kept leos, I just kept calcium in a little dish in their cage and dusted their crickets with a vitamin/calcium powder twice a week.
