Gecko info
I like the look of tokay and leopard geckos. I am totally inexperienced with them so I need some help. Pros and cons of each and some good sites for breeders and caresheets would be awesome.
Gecko owners please chime in, I can use all the help I can get.

Re: Gecko info
if you look at the caresheets in the list under site navigation, go to lizards and you can compare the two

Re: Gecko info
Most of the Tokays you find in a pet store type situation are WC imports. thay may or may not have parasites or be underweight. They're usually pretty aggressive as well so they're not good "pets" like Leos usually are. they're pretty interesting to keep though. My male is rapidly putting on weight and is more than happy to vocalize for me every night around dusk. He's very nice to look at but he certainly will bite the bejesus out of me if I get too close.

Re: Gecko info
If you like handling your gecko go with a leo
most tokays are NASTY little boogers and they bite HARD

Re: Gecko info
The tokays are cool because they get big. The handling part I will deal with, I guess I can wear a glove and see if it gets nicer lol.
Can you suggest some good breeders please ? I wont buy from a pet store plus I dont want a normal looking one. Thanks for the help everyone

Re: Gecko info
I can't really offer advice on either since I never really kept them (Morti had leopards when I first moved in, but that was ages ago).
I have handled calm Tokays, but they were the exception rather than the rule. Kevin at NERD produces some of the most amazing Tokays I have seen, but I don't believe he makes any wild types. You might have to call or e-mail him to find out.
If I were to ever get a gecko, it would have to be a Leachie. Those things get BIG.

Re: Gecko info
Kevin McCurley (N.E.R.D.) Breeds some spectacular Tokay morphs. New England Reptile Distributors, designer Ball Pythons, Reticulated Pythons, and much more! I don't know if he has any available at the moment but keep in mind that there is a VAST difference between these and your typical $20 normal import.

Re: Gecko info
Yeah I checked out NERD but nothing is available. I'd rather pay more for a CBB tokay then get a parasite infested one from the pet store. My local pet stores suck for selection and everything is WC.
I learned my lesson buying lizards from the pet store, lol. Any other breeders?
BHB only does leopards

Re: Gecko info
(checking KS.com)
Outback Reptiles says they have females laying eggs... WC females I'm sure.
I saw some "well aclimated" red and orange ones for $250 a piece.
WC wild types ones were starting at $9 + shipping. Haven't seen any CB wild types yet.

Re: Gecko info
I want to get some kind of a morph not a normal. I dont want a WC as I dont want to worry about getting a unhealthy animal. I will get a leo gecko if I find one I really like

Re: Gecko info
If its your first gecko, I'd honestly say go with a Leo (Or a crestie?). Tokays can be really mean little buggers (even CBB ones). if you're not ready to deal with a rather large, very fast, potentially pure evil lizard, don't get a tokay. And if you want a tokay morph, you're going to pay a pretty penny. I believe NERD is really the only big breeder working with them and they dont even have them publicly available. :/

Re: Gecko info
You'll probably have a much easier time finding a leo that you like versus trying to get a Tokay morph, they're quite expensive and not always available.

Re: Gecko info
Tokays are fun. I've owned Leos, and they're neat as well, but were I ever to buy another gecko or two, it would be a Crestie.

Re: Gecko info
Well after extensive reading and looking I'm going with leo's instead. I really like the morphs and they arent to expensive. They will be easier to keep and handle also.
I think breeding leo's would be a cool thing to try but I need alot more info before doing so. I have no clue about genetics of leo's or clutch size, breeder weight etc.

Re: Gecko info
Can you house more then one leo in a tank? If so what size enclosure do you say? Also cage size for single leo's as I'm sure you cant house males together.
I saw 18 months over 50 grams for females to breed, what about males? Can you mate 1 male to two females in a season?
Sorry for all the questions
