Intrested in a crestie

I am trying to get some info on cresties.. my soon to be 6 year old wants a Komodo Dragon.. lol.. we are trying to talk him in to something more reasonable.. I have seen cresties and think they are adorable, but dont know much about them. how easy are they to keep? I know the temps should be pretty easy to maintain.. but after that i am clueless.. any info would be great
thanks

Re: Intrested in a crestie

They are actually really easy to keep. Most will thrive on Crested Gecko diet and a few insects. Their temp requirements usually means they don't need any heat source and since they are nocturnal don't require special lighting either. As far as humidity goes, use a moss/dirt mixture for substrate and with occasional misting should be relatively easy to maintain. If you use a standard glass aquarium just cover most of the screen to retain moisture. We have a few crestie people on here that should be able to help you with anything you are wondering about, but generally they are very hardy and a great pet. Only thing I would be careful about is making sure your 6 year old is careful about washing his hands and is taught proper handling. They can drop their tails like any other gecko and they are small and easy to squish. The best thing is to have him hold him while sitting on a couch or the floor and to allow the gecko to walk on him rather than trying to hold him in his hands.

Re: Intrested in a crestie

I agree with pretty much everything Mongoose said, minus the substrate. Paper towels work fine, and there is ZERO impaction worry with it. Even if people say they've never had problems with loose substrate before, better safe than sorry.
As far as caging, you can keep smaller geckos in critter keepers. Both of my little guys are in the larger keepers, and it's plenty of room for them. As they get older, you can put them in tall exo-terras, or convert a screen-top into something with more vertical room. Hope that helped!

I feel honored to be referred to as a "huge crestie person" haha. I only have 4 ATM, but if I have my way, I'll have at least 2 more by the end of next year
Sam would be *the* person to talk to regarding pretty much any questions you have. I can't even tell you how much she helped me out. You may even want to consider getting your little booger from her

Re: Intrested in a crestie

Cresties are probably the easiest reptile, ever.

Babies and Juvi's do great in kritter keepers or small aquariums. Do not start a hatchling in something big right off the bat, it's likely to stress him out or make it so he cant find his food. if you got a baby, you could start him off in a plastic kritter keeper for the first few months then move him into your tank.

Please, do not use any lose substrates. having personally lost a gecko from impaction to a commonly used substrate with cresties (Eco Earth), I will never use anything but paper towel again. plus, it helps keep humidity up, is cheap, and super easy to clean.

Feeding crested gecko diet every other day works great as a schedule. I do not recommend buying the stuff in the bottle- it's a complete rip-off. I suppose for just one gecko you're not going to need a lot, but it's sooo much better getting it online from Pangea or the like. You can also feed crickets occasionally, and when/if you do, it would be a good idea to dust them with calcium powder.

no heat lights or special lighting are necessary, they thrive at room temp, and any prolonged hot periods can really stress them out.

Buy a spray bottle and mist the cage down once a day, twice if you can, and you're all set.

Make sure to put lots of plants in there (fake ones work great) and branches for the little one to climb around on.

ok..i think that's all i have to say for now :P

I could make that happen, just say the word and some geckos could find a way to accompany me to the Arlington show hehe
