Hi,
This will be my first time breeding geckos, and I would like to know exactly what to expect, and how the process works. (No jokes, guys..) Here is the scoop:
I have a female patternless, should be old enough to breed. Her weight is OK, but she does need to fatten up a bit. I also have a male normal, and they have lived together for quite some time. Lately, she has been tail whipping him..even when he gets near her. Is this because she is not ready yet, or that she does not like him?
OK, I picked up another female today, a little smaller then my patternless, but again, of correct size. Within minutes of being in there, the male started to bite her. As I watched, he turned himself around, and while biting (hanging) on to her head, she raised up her tail, and he proceded to hump her. This lasted maybe for 30 sec. or so. Afterwards, he started to lick himself. His "testicles" are swollen. They have repeated this process three times now. So, here come the questions:
1. Is the female patternless not ready, or just does not like him?
2. How long do mating sessions usually last? Will they do this everyday now?
3. Can he hurt her biting to hold on?
4. Why does he lick himself afterwards?
5. Is his "thingy " that movable that he can come from any side?
6. How long now until fertilization and egg laying?
7. Is there any things I need to check or follow up on that I missed?
Thanks in advance!!

She could be a "HOT" female which means she was incubated at to hot temps and therefor is too agressive.

As i sayed befor she migt be a hot female,or just not want to breed. ( my females did this sometimes when they just didnt feel like it.. but i got eggs from both)

Usualy they do it at night, pretty much every night
>>3. Can he hurt her biting to hold on?
Yes,but usualy it doesnt get to extreme

I am guessing to "clean" the spurm off?

Usualy 2 weeks

JP, that patternless might be a bit young for breeding. She was hatched sometime around july I think. And no BG.. I dont think she would be a hot female due to incubation temps were midrange(either sex). I would bet on the fact that she is too young and doesnt want to be mounted is the reason she tailwhips the male.
To answer what BG didnt and some he did..
1. NOT READY
4. Because he can
5. Either side yes
7. Go ahead and get your incubator set up now. That way the temps can be adjusted before you put the eggs in. You dont want to wait and then ruin the eggs. Check for the eggs being laid every day starting in about 3 to 4 weeks. And the first clutch is usually no good so dont beat yourself up for messing up on the first set.

Mid-range incubation is actualy when hot females are produced,I believe.

BG. From the information I have looked at, Occationally a female hatches out at the high temps one would incubate to get all males. This female is what they call hot and is no good for breeding nad can be aggressive. Midrange hatchling females are not concidered "hot females". Or at least I come to this conclusion from what I have read.

I would have to agree with Constrictor B on this (and everything else said to answer jpaulson's questions).. Hot females are produced from excessive temps when incubating. They are ususally extremely agressive, and usually sterile.
I wouldnt worry about the biting unless he seems overly agressive. They do get a bit rough when courting (if that's what you want to call it)!!
jpaulson-btw.. how's the new little sweet gecko doing??
The Nicaraguan you gave us is doing great!!
