Re: i come to a conclusion.
how long did you have your snake, and how long do think you'll like having a gecko until you are tired of it and want a turtle, or a llama? taking on an animal for a pet and getting rid of it to get something else ... not something I'd encourage.

Re: i come to a conclusion.
no worries man. Sometimes when you arent interested in something, it is healthier for the animal, to sell it to someone that will Love it as much as you once did. I just recently sold my geckos, because I wasnt interested in them anymore. I know that they went to a good home, and I know that they are being cared for and loved.
Just make sure, that your snakes go to someone that loves them, and will treat them with the best care possible

Re: i come to a conclusion.
5 days ago it seems you were thinking of getting an rtb, so ... I mean, definitely getting the snakes to someone who wants it more is a good idea, but buying stuff you might not want is my concern.

Re: i come to a conclusion.
I agree. If you don't want to take care of a ball python, be sure you find someone who will... But good for you for at least realizing you didn't want a bp instead of neglecting it or something...
And please be sure that you want a gecko! ...because i also thought you were going to a red tail. Don't just buy something because it's cool - do your research and make sure you are willing to commit!

as for the lifespan, they have not been in the pet trade long enough to establish a true average lifespan, at least not that I've heard of. If I had to estimate, I'd go with about 15yrs. That seems to be an average for many geckos.
And PLEASE make sure this is what you want to do. Cresteds are incredible animals, but they are higher maintenance than snakes are. This is something that will require daily care and upkeep. Especially if you start breeding them, it can be very time consuming. Please do your research and know what you're getting into before you jump in the game.
As for set-up, a ten gallon is fine for a baby, but I really recommend something larger for an adult. and for frame of reference, they can be fully grown in 8mo or less given proper keeping and feeding. You want lots of humidity and room temps should be fine. You dont want it too warm because it can easily stress them out. For adults, I use custom enclosures or a 20L standing on-end. They seem to like height rather than width. This set-up isn't the BEST for keeping humidity in, so it's best to use an ExoTerra or something. Spray the cage 1-2 times a day, feed Crested Gecko Diet (a powder you mix with water) every other day, maybe crickets a few times a week if you wish, and you're all set.
Make sure the gecko you buy is healthy. I know one petco near me that is absolutely horrendus with keeping all reptiles, and especially their cresteds always look horrible. Oh- and JSYK, DO NOT go by the care sheet they give you there. it is WRONG. I have read it and there are more than a few errors on it. DO NOT go by it. Fork over the extra $10 for a book, it's worth it.
However, I DO have a crested I bought from a petco- not that same one though- and she's gorgeous, and healthy as can be.
Good luck with anything you choose and if oyu have any questions, feel free to PM me.

Use Paper towel as substrate. problem solved
I use EcoEarth in my breeder tanks, only. and that's because my females are stupid and refuse to use any laybox i give them, and I'd rather them bury the eggs in cocofiber than right on the paper towel. argg. lol

Re: i come to a conclusion.
Is this something you're planning on doing really soon? In another thread you started you said you weren't going to be able to buy a car seat for your daughter or toys for Christmas or cover rent because of a car accident you were in. If you're not interested in the snakes anymore, by all means sell them to someone who will care for them. But please get yourself in a stable financial situation before taking on any other pets. With a car to repair, the holidays, and another child on the way, you might want to wait before adding another financial burden.

Re: i come to a conclusion.
Jake, if you planning to have any kind of reptiles for 15 years, please please please factor in the cost of vet care. I hear it's really expensive and a long ways away in your area (from one of your threads). There's nothing more frustrating than reading a thread about "I can't afford to take my sick reptile to the vet." Reptiles are not cheap. Please consider this carefully. Did we ever get an update on your sick ball?
