Bugs in Gargamel's cage!!

So I have to refill Gargamel's (my frog-eyed gecko) water dish at least twice a day because he goes in there and flings water all over the place. I wouldn't mind that except that wet sand seems to be a breeding ground for gnats (or something similar). Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping the sand bug free or keeping his water in the dish? Changing out all that sand constantly is quite a chore...

Oh he IS crazy. This is what he was doing to his sand before he made it a bit pile of mud: Gargamel's "digs"

I know I'd get the same issue with Jungle Bed. ReptiBark is too rough for him (frog-eyed geckos have VERY sensitive scales). I guess I could give aspen a go... It'd be a lot easier to replace than the sand...

Re: Bugs in Gargamel's cage!!

Yes, aspen bedding might work better, but I don't know how you feed him lol.

OR! You could get a larger ceramic dish or plate to put the water bowl in...maybe I donno

I worry that might be too rough for him. He's got extremely sensitive scales.

He gets 4 large crickets every other day, dusted every other feeding. I just toss them in there and he hunts at his leisure. I'm not sure a larger dish would work... It's a good suggestion though.

How about 6 inches of dirt mixed with that sand and a deeper bowl set in it that way it doesn't move.

Re: Bugs in Gargamel's cage!!

you can try the excavator clay mixed with the sand it a lot stronger than sand for the same desired affects plus the water helps keep the clay from breaking up. i used it in my leopard gecko tank and built caves through it and they just love it
