I am not too familiar with that species either, but look at the vent area, do you see some pre-anal or post anal bulges?
Most likely male if you see that as it is usually the hemipene package.

Welcome to Reptilehaven LynzieKae! I don't have first-hand experience with Hemidactylus, but as others have mentioned males of most gecko species have similar charateristics. If they are sexually mature the job is a bit easier than with a very young animal. I would look for two things to I.D. a male: some arrangement of pre-anal pores (in front of the vent) and hemipenile bulge behind the vent, at the base of the tail. I would imagine you've read similar descriptors in your research, but thats kinda all there is to go by, as far as I know! Despite the tail coming off that won't affect the sexual identification. Kinda sad that the woman you got your gecko from caused the tail to come off. Be aware, it will grow back, but not be quite as nice or as pretty as the original. All the more reason to be careful when handling geckos and never grab them by the tail. Again, welcome!!! If they are similar to leo's, the male will have a row of pores, almost in a wide V shape just above the vent. Below the vent, where the tail joins, you will see 2 bulges, similar to testicles. The female is absent of these.

From your picture, if your gecko is an adult, then I am 90% positive that it is a female. In adult males, you wouldn't be able to miss the bulges at all. However, in females, they're either very slightly noticeable, or not noticeable at all. Unless of course, your gecko is one of the "cursed" males.
Below is a male Moorish gecko. You can see how visible the bulges are between the legs and the base of the tail.
For those of you who've never seen one, this is a Mediterranean gecko. You can also see the bulge right at the base of the tail. By the way, these geckos aren't mine, just pictures I found online.
