Re: leopard geckos and heat rocks

a lot of people look down on hot rocks because they have the ability to overheat and burn ur reptile. if u have it hooked up to a thermostat set to about 88, i think it would be ok. i would not use one plugged in without a thermostat tho.

Re: leopard geckos and heat rocks

Personally I would never have a heat rock in my house let alone one of my animal's cages. Too risky and I've seen and read about too many horror stories. There are much better options on the market these days. I think the things ought to be outlawed.

Hey now! I work at PetSmart and I remove those things from the shelf every time our stockers put them out. Not all of us pet store employees are ignorant when it comes to reptile care.

Re: leopard geckos and heat rocks

I would say absolutely not.

I volunteered in a vet's office for a few weeks, and we had a couple lizards come in that I don't even care to describe again the damage caused to them by heat rocks.

Even with a thermostat, heat rocks can and will short out. Unfortunately, when heat rocks short out, they heat up instead of just turning off. You're lucky if it doesn't just start a fire instead.

Hey, I worked in a pet store for 3 years and I never let anyone walk out with a heat rock.
