Hello, all;
I have a small Tokay (about 4" from snout to tail) that I picked up a while ago at an exotic animal show. He looks good, eats about a dozen large crickets every week, and is agressive as all get-out. I currently have him in a 10gal. vivarium, complete with a couple of plants, a half-log & a water bowl. I mist him twice daily & change his substrate weekly. I was wondering; do you guys have any husbandry tips you could offer, especially when it comes to the type of substrate? I'm currently using repti-bark, but I was thinking about switching to something else. As far as heating goes, I have a 'moon glow' noctunral basking light on top of the screen that I keep on constantly.
TIA,
Hajii

cypress mulch, of all the wood products out there does not rot or mold/mildew and actually holds humidity rather than absorb it....and it's cheap too...about 2 bucks for a huge bag.

I want a tokay so bad. I've been researching them for a long time and now I just want to get one. I don't want to hold it or tame it, I just want it for looks and beauty.

We used to have a few tokays. They are pretty cool. Our were quite vocal. Don't let the cute little smile of theirs fool you, they bite hard. One of ours bit Joe and wouldn't let go for half an hour. He had a nice little set of prints on his palm. We kept ours on paper for awhile and it worked but doesn't look the greatest.

They can actually be tamed. Just let them clamp on and sit and watch TV for a few hours at a time...They won't let go. LOL...Yah it can hurt a little but you get used to it. After ohhhh 20 or so times doing this they sometimes calm down and can be handled. If you need to get them off...Just dangle them over their cage. They won't hang and dangle long. Don't shake them off (well, maybe a little wiggle ) You can let them bite a glove and pull the glove off and put them back in the cage glove and all...You might not get your glove back for a couple of hours but it hurts less...the only thing is, it takes a lot longer to tame them with a glove than it does when they just give up on the idea that you really care that they are biting you. careful, they are lightning fast and can run up anything....if you have one get loose, don't bother looking for it. Just turn out the lights and close the door. Make sure no cats are around. Wait till 2 or 3am and go in and flip the light on. They will usually be high on the wall near the ceiling at that time looking for bugs. During the day they will be some place that you would never think to look and even if you do, they can be hard to see sometimes depending on what they found to hide in, under, ontop of, on the side of or behind.

OK, thanks for the info guys.
Julius, I kknow what you mean; this little guy's latched on to me a couple of times when I've transferred him to a holding tank to clean his tank out . Boy, they are fast; I just hope he doesn't get away like my last one did many years ago when I lived in NYC; didn't see him for a year & when I did see him, I had given up on him, thinking he was dead; I was moving & saw him when I moved the china hutch & he had grown about 4" I guess it was all those New York cockroaches
