Leo eggs questions

My son's leo laid two eggs this morning (first time).

I placed them on top of a 1:1 mixture of perlite and water (same orientation as when laid).

The plastic container has no holes. Do they need holes, or will a daily peek allow enough air exchange?

What is the optimal incubation temp for females?

How long is the expected incubation time at that temp?

Is their anything else I need to know?

Thanks all. I'm a Boa guy, so these leggy, egg-layers are freaking me out.

Re: Leo eggs questions

i'm very tired, but I want to say that the temp for females is 80-85, but I dont know for sure.

congrats on the eggies!

i have no idea what the incubation period is, my guess is around 60ish days.

Re: Leo eggs questions

Uh..... okay.

You dont need air holes. Daily peek will leave for plenty of air exchange. If you are experiencing temperature fluctuations [not controlled by a thermostat] Or condensation in the container, its a good idea to poke a couple holes in it [like needle size] a pan of water at the bottom of your incubator will act as a buffer to keep your temperatures more stable, and keep the humidity up. Like if you are using a box/old fridge and heat tape on a dimmer.

Eggs incubated at 79 should produce 100% females. 85-87 produce almost an equal number of males and females.

At temperatures of 76-82 eggs will hatch in 75-102 days.

Re: Leo eggs questions

My additional advice to what Tamara said is, and in my oppinion, don't go above 87 or you may produce hot females who are sterile and are mad grumpy. The slower the hatch time, the better. All good things come to those who wait. LOL. And from experience, watch the area where you put your incubator. i.e. bathroom with lots of windows, area where the sun shines in a few hours a day and goes away. This will greatly flucuate your temps, regardless of a thermostat. I kept mine in my bathroom the first time I ever tried breeding and it was a weird spring where the daily out door temps went nutty. One of my babies hatched with eye deformities. I now keep mine in my closet where the temps stay regular. Good Luck. One more tip. If you ever see the little LED tiny flashlights with the long, flexible neck at a gas station, get one! They make the best candlers. I have a few I collected from gas stations.

Let us know how its going.
