Can you answer this straight forwardly. I heard that geckos can become obese if you feed them to much? My gecko Bushuu weighs close to 100 grams. Would you consider that an obese gecko? He's about 10 1/2 inches long. And how much should I feed these guys? Bushuu has been eating a lot lately and has fat sacs under his armpits that are huge!! Is my gecko obese?

Does obesity really exist in geckos?

Yup! He needs to work out some!

Obesity can be seen in ANY animal.
It doesn't matter if it's mammal, reptile, winged or whatever!
Cut down his food intake so he can lose it gradually.

So if he has fat sacs under his armpits and a big belly with really robust arms and legs he's obese? What can happen to a gecko if he's really really obese? I feed him mostly giant mealworm. Should I alternate with weeks?

well.. i dunno about obese.. hes LARGE..

i have a male whos 11" long and pushin almost 120 grams now.. hes not "obese".. hes just BIG.. LOL.. he eats a diet of ONLY super worms.. and hes never had a problem with them..

id say give him a more rich cage enviornment?.. or perhaps take him out more often so he can wander around and work off some of the "pudge".. LOL

maybe cut his food intake a tad?.. instead of 5-10 a night.. maybe feed only 5.. and maybe mix in crickets so hes gotta chase his food..?

best of luck

The problems with obesity are that it causes stress through reduced circulitory and breathing abilities from having fatty deposits pressing on and around the heart and lung area.
This not only slows them down and gets them a little lazy but also undermines their immune system by having it either work overtime, taxing it even more or can simply lead to a reduced amount of protection for when it does encounter a bug or two.

Your's is a 11 inches and reaching 120 grams? Thats huge!! I thought my male was pretty huge, but I guess I'm wrong. I trying to take him out daily now and I did feed him crickets. He just gets bigger and bigger. I think his tail has gotten fatter rather than his gut. It has about an 1 inch tail. He's really cute looking though will all that pudge!!!
