Well, im new to keeping reptiles, so i hope you guys can help me out a little. My leopard gecko comes out at night and attempts to escape... He has tried to climb up against the side of the cage to get to the ventilation hole. He has also tried to dig in the sand in a corner of the cage.. Also, he tries to get "through" the front glass. Are such escape attempts normal behavior for a gecko?
If not, what have i done wrong?

Hey,
Provide the gecko with more hiding spots, hammocks, etc. so he wont get bored and try to escape. Hope that helped a little.

You're doin' fine. Leopards like to explore and to dig so don't worry about that. Is your gecko in a all glass tank? This can sometimes confuse them, they can see things beyond the tank but can't understand why they can't get to them hense the wall climbing and trying to come through the glass. You can prevent it by putting paper/backing over the back and sides of your viv.

Ok, so he's just bored?
some info about my setup:
I have two caves, one in the warm end and one in the "cool" end. I also have a stone that he can hide under. Do I need more?

No, its only glass in the front of the cage, the rest is plywood. Im just a little worried, cause as i mentioned, im new to keeping reptiles and you dont find information on these things on regular caresheets, at least i havent found any. Thanks for replying (goes for DerekBenson aswell)

This may or may not be the case but if the temperatures are too hott for the animal they will try an escape ya know? Trying to avoid the heat.. If you don't wanna put a big ol background on the front of your cage juss put up a couple stickers or something.. I've noticed that my Leo does get confused with the glass but it interest him more than bothers.. They are very curious animals..

Yeah I agree. Give them something to do. More hide spots, branches and rocks to climb on. My geckos still do the glass climbing thing sometimes. I just think they're being silly thats all or maybe they like climbing the glass. Entertainment I guess, they aren't the smartest reptiles you know.
