My leo Xena is 5-6"
would she be big enough to use sand as a substrate?
I am not sure of her age.

Xena should be big enough.
I just moved our two leos over to calcisand a few days ago although we are continuing to feed in a plastic lid so they don't eat too much of the sand.

I just put one of my leos on the cherry red calcisand recently. He looks gorgeous on it! I'm going to be moving my female leo over to calcisand soon. I think she's finally big enough. Another of my babies is growing up!

I still wouldn't put mine on sand even if they are about 5-6 inches. Sand is really bad unless you get the calci sand. That's not so bad, but if your going to put them on sand, make sure you feed them outside the cage or with tweezers so they don't get a mouthful of sand when their prey is on the ground.
