Ok, the breeder said male, because he incubated them to be male (?). I know my eyesight is terrible, but do any of you see hemipenes bulges? I am thinking of maybe someday getting another, but I don't want to risk two males, just in case. Either way, I will probably try to find a female, but baby leos might be fun, too. He's my youngest daughter's gecko. I feed him, clean him, water him and play with him, but he's hers. Go figure. Actually, she will feed him even though the crickets scare her (my, what we do when we love our pets) she doesn't cry when the crickets jump at her anymore, must be getting braver. She also cleans his cage, but I put a stop to that when I caught her picking poo with her hands instead of the net, ewwwwww! She said the net scares him. *sigh* But, I know she loves him and she does a great job for a 5 year old, I am very proud of her. Anyway, enough rambling, here's the tail pics. Thank y'all!
and:
Again, thanks.

Well, if the gecko were still young, you wouldn't be able to identify it yet. But, you told me in chat that it was at least 6" in length. So, I'm sorry to tell you this but, Peter does not have a peter.

Oh, so no need for the embarassing crotch shot? Poor Peter.
Thanks, though!

I concur, Bry is absolutely correct with the Peter patter. I'm not sure thats the final chapter, though. Looking at the size of the nice fat tail next to your finger, it's hard to believe Peter is 6". Do you know WHEN he was born? Sex is definitely governed by incubation temps in Leos, but there is always room for error. Unless Peter is under about 6 months, he's a she. By the way, I have been picking poo and eating donuts at the same time, for many years. 99% of the time I use my bare hand. I wash my hands after, have never had the pleasure of meeting Sam and Ella. I am very careful around sick animals and dirty aquatic stuff, however. Good, healthy reptile poo is good for your fingernails, lol!

Yep, I'd have to agree -- unless "Peter" is still fairly young, he's definitely been hiding something from you Hopefully he won't be too traumatized by his change in status -- you might want to find him a new name though
Don't feel too bad though, I have a friend who's leo was a fully mature male (so they thought!), only to find out a few months ago that "he" was actually a "she"...

I measured her last, she's 6 1/2 inches from nose to taill tip. I think she's about 1 year old. I bought her last July and she was almost 4 inches then. Is she too fat? I seem to be bad about getting them fat, at least I know Murray isn't exactly skinney. I didn't think she was fat, but she is my first (actually Laurie's) gecko.
Oh, BTW, her new name is Rose (from The Titanic, the kids loved that movie).

I have to go against the grain here. That leo is a male. "Hemipenal bulges", or lack thereof, ARE NOT a reliable indicator of gender.
The pics are fuzzy, but In2Geckos is correct in that the preanal pores are rather distinct on this animal. Contrary to what has been previosly stated, Peter doesn't need a name change.

Kogoz, is it vaguely similar to iguanas in the sense that males exhibit enlarged pores. However, the pores are located differently. In leos, the pores are located on the ventral surface just before the cloaca, hence the term "pre anal".

the pre-anal pores? I am blind! hmmm, maybe Peter/Rose will just have to live (and die) a virgin. I am so confused. I could either get more leos and watch that they get along, or just love this one totally to death. Maybe someday, when I find just the right gecko, I could introduce them and pray they don't kill each other. Thanks for the opinions, guys.

Pre-anal pores are a v shaped line of pores located between the back legs.

Actually, females have pre-anal pores, too, they're just not as noticeable. I'd say Pete is now Rose. Here's pics of two of mine that I know are correctly sexed, I've seen them breeding.
Male
Female
See the pores on the female? This is what makes me think Peter is a girl.

Given the perspective of the picyures (distance, focus), I still believe the leo to be a male

Peter is definitely female. IMO anyway. Females also have the V but it's not as pronounced. Don't worry I went through the same thing with Murtle. Luckily she started out as a boy with a girly name so her identity crisis wasn't too horrible .
