Anyone have Oscars?
I get to be the first post! So here's my question: Does anyone know how to tell the sex of an Oscar? How about a Jack Dempsey? I have both, and have yet to be able to figure it out. No eggs, or babies to give it away, either.

Yes, I have to Tiger Albinos (white with red markings).
As far as I know, there is no way to externaly tell the sex of Oscars. There is a theory that if the bottom fin extends back to overlap the tail fin, you might have a male, vs a female were they won't overlap. I have no basis to think this is right, read it somewhere.

I had oscars in the past, mostly Tigers. They are an awesome species to own as far as fish go. As far as sexing, Oscars are not sexually dimorphic. I've never heard about the fin thing, as slaponte mentioned so I can't say for sure about that. Obviously, the most reliable way to tell would be to watch breeding and courtship behavior. I've never kept Jack Dempseys, so I can't say if the same holds true for that species.

Slap...just looked at your album. How big are those plecos? I used to have a pair in an 80 gal. tank with my oscar. The larger of the 2 plecos was easily 2 feet and about 3-4" across at the head.

i dont know if it works with oscars the same way it works with africans but the bottoms side of the them you will see two "holes" if one is bigger thenthe other then it is goin to be a female...when you grab him be very careful with the slimecoat and make sure your hands stay nice and wet

The plecos are huge. They used to be my brother's, and he past them on to me. They are longer than the Oscars, probably at 12 inches or more.
Unfortunately, even on the 90G they don't seem to have the space they need. At that size those plecos should be in a pond somewhere. Since I put them on the 90G they swim against the back side all the time and have rubbed off the tip of their noses. I have tried to provide more hiding places but it is just not enough floor space.
Besides that there are some Guramis in there. Those are very resiliant little fish.

Sorry Faze, I just can't bring myself to grab my fishies. Besides, at 10 and 12 inches, they might not like it much. I'll just wait to see if I ever get any babies, or eggs, as the case may be. Great fish, tho. Lots of personality.
