Goldfish X Koi??

It wasn't planned. My 7" goldfish has lived alone for 4 or 5 years in a small pond. 2 days ago, we decided to try introducing a pretty little koi. The koi is small; about 3" long. I was afraid they would fight. After playing fish tag initially, they are now, 48 hours into the relationship, preparing to spawn. I guess koi are related somehow. Do you think we'll get viable offspring?

Wow, they sound like me when I was a teenager.

A koi and goldfish hybrid? That sounds very cool, yet very bizarre.

Re: Goldfish X Koi??

Goldfish and koi are related to the carp family.... but as far as offspring from a koi and goldfish, I don't know. I would think the little 3" koi would be too small at this point to breed. Is the goldfish chasing/pushing the koi around?

Koi and goldfish generally get along together in ponds anyway.

No chasing now. They're busily and single-mindedly scouring the side and bottom in a corner of the pond.

I just checked them again. It's true love for sure. They only pause from the cleaning procedure, to touch eachother head to tail, and make sure the other is still there. LOL

I'll try to get a good pic or 2.

Hopefully if yours do decide to breed the offspring will look nothing like those.

Maybe they'll eat them before the kids get big enough to eat mom and dad.

Re: Goldfish X Koi??

i have bred koi and goldfish to be nice for show purposes i had a ryukin i needed to be longer but the outcome isnt very promising you maybe get 1-5 of what you were looking for if any but a 3" koi is not at spawning maturity they are just playing at this stage but they can breed because they are both part of the Cyprinidae family
