Depends on what type of catfish.... Corys will stay about 2.5 inches no matter what, and some red-tails get about 3 feet long in about 4-5 years, depending on food.

Depends on the catfish species. Flatheads (which I have in the river behind my house) can sometimes get up to 6ft. The largest I would go for a catfish is a bullhead... they can get up to 15"... one per 55 gallons.
Are you talkin' about buying catfish from a petstore or catching one from the wild?

fish tend to only grow to a certain size in their environment... i don't know if this applies to all fish, but i know goldfish do.
still, it depends on the species... i would do a little research on what you're looking at and find out what species they are.

I think you can use the formula of 1" of fish for every square foot of surface area in your tank. At least I think thats the right formula? Might want to check with someone else who keeps a lot of freshwater fish.
Hope it helps.

I have no clue what kind they would be, they could be any kind of catfish that live in a pond or lake... you need to catch one and get a book or somethin' to figure out what it is... it's not real easy to identify catfish sometimes because there are so many species, but it needs to be done.
I wouldn't want to make the mistake of putting a catfish that gets up to 4ft in a 55 gallon tank... because it may or may not outgrow it.
