synadontis not growing
Almost 3 years ago, we bought 2 synadontis eupterus cats. They were really small, like 3/4". One soon learned to feed at the top, when I fed the malawis. The other never comes to the top.
One has grown to about 5", but the one that stays on the bottom is still about an inch, with the juvenile markings!! He gets plenty of food, but just isn't growing at all. I put a really big, 6" one in there a while ago. He harassed the 5" one until I moved him to another tank. He never bothers the small one though. I guess he's not a threat. It's kind of nice having a catfish dominating a cichlid tank. If a cichlid starts getting agressive, he has to think about the catfish.
I've been thinking about going SW again, but I don't want to give the catfish up.

I had Cichlids..all Vic's though.. I had a couple of Malawis.. I had a Pseudotropheus Socolofi Red Zebra and it made it through 9 moves from apt to small tank, to big tank, to adding fish, to losing fish, to moving into another room, to moving into another apt..etc..I moved here and it died I loved that fish!
Anyways I had 2 syns that lived thru 4 moves..They never got very big..I had them over a year..One was growing noticeably..but not great.
Synodontis..They NEVER grew untill my neighbor took them over and she got angels with them..They just got HUGE in like a month!
I think she was overfeeding so they were getting more of the stuff off the bottom..
Do you feed sinking pellets or flakes? If you feed flakes, drop pellets in..they drop to the bottom and the cats get it..
Well her little angels died within a month, so I am def. leaning to overfeeding and now she has gold fish...she took the syns down to the Exotic Tropicals and swapped them off for GOLD FISH..just average garden variety gold fish..
Those syns were the largest Ive ever seen! Well over the 5" range..Id have kept them and got more cichlids..but hey thats just me!
Its nice to have someone else who has Cichlids..I never knew anyone when I had mine and I do miss them..But with my baby, she beats on the glass...so the poor fish would be like "Find a happy place! Find a happy place!" like in Finding Nemo LOL

I feed them Hikari floating balls, the green ones. I think they're called cichlid staple. The cichlids tend to overstuff their mouths. When they chew, they drop a lot for the catfish. You can see the little one's belly fill up. He just isn't growing. Maybe the males are really small...
Malawis are great. With a few simple rules, they're really easy to keep! One of the secrets is to crowd them, in order to limit agression. Then you can have a tank full of males from differen't species. You should avoid having males from the same species though. I use crushed coral for a PH buffer.

See, in the last 4 places I lived..I could use STRAIGHT tap..it came out at 7.6 and was PERFECT for them..
then we moved here and I guess this water has a LOT more something in it..The pH is the same, but it killed my fish almost within a day or so of moving..and I didnt do anything different..So all I could figure is high chlorine levels..It does taste funny unless you drop in a couple of drops of lemon, so I am wondering if I measured the pH right...Maybe its a lot more alkaline than I thought..I know its hard cause its tough to lather shampoo, etc..
Anyways..post some pics of the lil guys..
I lost all mine in the great computer crash of 06!

I just tried taking a few pics. The camera freaks the cichlids out. I'll have to de-sensitize them...

Youll need to try a sinking pellet ... like the earthworm or shrimp pellet. Malawis love them ... so I usually dropped them in at the same time as the floating pellets.
I used to buy my fishfood in bulk at http://www.kensfish.com. The also carry HBH which is a great brand.
I had a SA tank with severums, oscars, and tinfoil barbs, and a Malawi tank with Auloncara Maisoni, Electric Yellows, and loaches.
