I would never use flakes on oscars, only pellets or feeders.

Flakes with oscars isnt a relly good idea. It would take a large amount of flakes to fill a feeding, There are alot of phosphates in flakes, which will result in a algae bloom. Flakes also tend to swell alot once ingested ... with the amount the oscar will be eating it could cause health problems.

It depends on your meaning of "short term". One to two days may not be a problem ... but I wouldnt go much over that. Mine miss a feeding about every 2 weeks (intentional) to help clean them out and ensure that im not overfeeding.

I feed them mysis shrimp, earthworm pellets, shrimp pellets, a pellet mix from HBH for South Americans, Every third day they get Frozen brine shrimp, Nightcrawlers or Europen nightcrawlers every 2 weeks, feeders once a month, and a few dozen crickets once a month. Mine dont seem to like heart or liver meat.

These would be some better options than flake. Also too much protein can produce hole-in-the-head disease.

flakes are horrible for large fish, takes too much to fill, breaks down to easily and creates way to much mess

on top of the goldfish flake is a horrible idea, no offence meant but goldfish diets are mor on the veggie side and when was the last time anyone saw an oscar eat vegetation

your best bet is Pellets. the odd occasion feeders, but feeders all the time will create a problem due to the lack of nutrients and the fish itself will have weakened immune system, then comes Hole in the head disease,

go pellets
