Hi everyone...
At the Atlanta show, I brought up to Julius and Herp the topic of names. I wanted to put this out on the site, and see what others think.
Bluntly put, I think we need another system for giving members name ratings. Upgrading a member strictly on posts is very inaccurate. There are those here (and you know who you are) that post at everything, just to get your posts up and upgrade your name. I have seen some that have gone from a newbie to a ninja in just a few days. That is just not right!! On the other side, there are those listed as newbies that are highly skilled in rept's, but just choose not to post much. What can be done?
I think it is harmful for those new to our site to take the advice from someone listed as an expert, when in reality they know nothing but how to make a 2 word comment to others' posts. Saying LMAO should not count as a post, or at least not in consideration to an upgrade.
This reminds me of the Holiday Inn commercials. "Are you a doctor?" "No, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express."
We need a better way of distinquishing the REAL experts from the fakes. I am listed as an expert...but I know that I am not. Comments??

I agree, I don't post to bring my rank up, I even asked Julius to change my rank because I dont want to mislead people, I just like to post! But I agree with you

It's a good idea, but tricky... Unless someone can talk the admins and vets of the site into interviewing a member when they wanted their rank upped, it would be hard to arrange a system of ranking based on actual knowledge and experience.

I agree with you, I am sure it would be hard to do. But I do think that we need to do something, or at least put all these "expert" minds together on it.

I can only speak for myself, but after being here awhile, I kinda pretty much ignore the ranks....other's change them to something more personal. i.e. BWsmiths is the "Resident Hot Head" He works with hots, Kogoz remains "The Annoying teen", etc.

This is something that has never really been a problem here. Yeah some post at everything and then some post very little. Usally you can gather from the expression's and word's if the person or person's in question really know what they are talking about or not? There are several people that frequent the site that have been here a lot longer than I have and still only have the "Title of Ninja" or lower. Me personally I don't see where it cause's problem's it was just something fun that was added on the side to keep it interesting. Also I don't mind someone that's a newbie comming on here and giving me advise. The way I see it I don't know it all and will never know it all and I learn something new everyday.

I think Lori said she would give out names from now on, as long as she gets to use her own words.... Just shoot her an email at LORI_SnakesREule@redtailboa.net

Just kidding....
I dont pay attention to the "status" on the side either except to see what crazy status someone was given such as "newbie4life" and "guru of poo".

I think most of us look at the content of the message more than the level of the poster. You can usually tell you who is blowing smoke and those that have sound advice. The people who just double and triple post usually don't have much to say, so normally they are ignored anyhow. I for one when I was new tried to get at least 3 opinions before I did anything, but I know some people just do the first thing mentioned. I don't think anyone here would give out bad advice to a newbie....most of us say "No idea this is just a bump" or something very similar. Just relax about the titles, you will learn the people and who ALWAYS gives good advice, and seek them out.

You can find the answers to most problems within yourself. Just ask the ever popular question, WWJD....What would Julius do? LOL...ugh I'm going straight to heck for that one.
lol...the cuss filter got me....since when is h-e- double hockey sticks a cuss word anyway? and won't this prevent the use of the formal version of Hi? Howdy hecko!

personally, i think changing the system would be an excellent idea. perhaps simply having a personal title as opposed to a knowledge rating. i think that's fairly dangerous.
some might come on here and simply pop in, ask a question, see an 'expert' respond and pop out. not all people come back to update, especially the ones who are bad about researching and ask simple questions anyway.
only those who visit here regularly would know sometimes that people who are rated 'expert' are far from being one on herps...merely witty replies perhaps.
in anycase, i think the rating system should be done away with altogether and just have a 'nickname' as it were. that way, no one is rated. now, the one exception to this rule i think would be people who honestly qualify as experts. might there be a way to make note of these people so that people truly in need can be confident about the knowledge they're receiving?
personally, i don't take any one person's word as even though they might be an expert, they can still be fallable. i research as much as i can and then additionally ask opinions. a lot of knowledge is gained from experience that isn't necessarily listed on caresheets, in books, etc. however, for the true newbies that buy a rtb without knowing how large it can get...they are looking for minimal work yielding maximum results...and for them, the results could sometimes be very unfortunate.

I agree with the change BUT I also agree that it would be to much work to "interview" everyone so they would know what to put there. I saw it when mine went to "expert" and I was Like "nooo, please." Mine would be more like "Learning more every day!" If it is anything like horses. You are good at it, you are always learning!

yah but who wants to have to keep up with 2000+ users for personal titles?...many of which rarely come in here anyway. If natas wants to change the ranking system to something like newbie-regular-ninja etc...I think the only real problem is the "expert" label....this seems to be the one causing controversy...we could just drop that one and I think everyone would be happy.

well, the simple thing would be to make everyone a newbie, then change the title at personal request. otherwise, it stays that way. or perhaps, 'newcomer' would be a more appropriate term. then, only if someone wants to be considered an 'expert', THEY need to email someone who will review their request. makes things harder on the user but much easier on the admins.
