I apologize if there's another post on this somewhere, I didn't have time this morning to look.

If a mouse/rat is too big, will the snake still attempt to eat it...and hurt itself? My BRB is I believe seven months old now...and I think I should switch it to adult mice now. (It's about 2 feet long now). I know that for BRBs the food should be bigger than the girth of the snake...but I'm not sure how much bigger. So far I've been feeding it the largest hoppers that the reptile shop has (pre-killed of course). They are bigger than the snake's girth, but not by much. Thanks,
Scott

HI there. You can try feeding it the adults. It should be fine. As long as it is not a huge difference in size you will be fine. Snakes are greatly evolved eating machines! It's all they do. I have never heard of snake injuring itself from eating to large a meal. Not to say it can't happen, I have just never heard of it if it has. I have heard of snakes regurging very large meals. This could be from any number of things though. All in all you should be fine. Someone else will be along shortly to help you out some more.

my babies after a few weeks were eating adult mice!

when you kill the mouse- pull it strait! see if it is too big.

dont worry- you have to experiment. if it is to big- then you know not to get that size for a while more.

if it is too big that 1 time, dont worry- the snake should be fine- JUST DONT MAKE IT A HABIT!

Yes you can feed to big and a snake can hurt himself.i am not sure of the rule for brb but i always stick to the girth rule.if you think he is still hungery why not offer another mouse?

at the "only one open, and worst one in town" petstore today I saw they got a new burm. it's not a big one at all, I couldn't really tell how big it was, but not big enough to eat the one jumbo, and 2 large rats that it did! I saw the snake as I passed by it, you could totally see a couple one 3/4 inch "bumbs" in it where rat parts were pushing out on the inside. the scales were all seperated and you could see the skin underneith on about 4 inches of the snake. the snake was feed 4 days ago. I've heard this before as a rule of thumb that if the snake is stretched so that you can see the skin under his scales when it is all the way swallowed, that's too big. has anyone else heard this rule? -Juggalo
