Hey yall...
I've been feedin my 6ft JPC medium rats every Friday for a long time now...
I just call all of my friends to come over and we just make a bbq party out of it...
well.... last Friday the guys told me that rats are startin to get old and I should
try some new menue items for Jamie ( my JPC)
so here is my question...
would it be ok if I threw a baby chicken (chick) in there?
that would be cool and diferent.
It wouldnt hurt my snake at all would it?
I know of a couple of guys that feed their burms adult chickens...
this is just a smaller substatute...
whatcha think?
and dont worry about all of the stress that a group of people whatchin her eat would cause .
Jaimy dont mind at all because I make everyone stand a ways back and then I try to keep the whole endevor (hey look a big word....yes!)
educational.. My friends think Im smart...(Im not smart, I just repeat every thing that I learned from books and voalla ) they think Im a herp geniouse...... Whatever..
see I cant even spell... anyways.
what do you all think about me servin a few chicks to my Jaimy?
thanks.
Peace!

I think you'll change your mind about feeding fowl to your snake after the first defecation.

Yeah, one chick induced runny, stinky poop will probably turn you away from feeding fowl.

Please excuse my ignorance....but what is a JPC? Did you mean JCP by chance? So anyway...how did keeping herps become a sporting event?

I guess his neighbors complained too much about the dog fights going on over there on weekends so he had to have quieter animals to abuse.
Barrin, there will come a time in your life that maturity will overcome your desire to seek entertainment from the death of animals. I hope anyway.

Sounds like you are feeding live and have a party for it to look cool.

Sounds like the coolness is wearing off...and your buddies may one day suggest that you scent a candy bar or a sucker for the show.
Has your JCP been bitten yet?
I'm willing to bet it probably has.
A live food item can kill your snake very easily. Sometimes in the initial bite, other times due to an infection occurring afterwards.
We have a care sheet on feeding live and why NOT to do it.
Check it out HERE.
there is also a section on the ways to feed safely.
Check it out HERE.
If you decide your snake isn't cool enough anymore, please let it go to a rescue group.
As for cool pets from here om out, I will suggest pet rocks.
They can be spray painted with any color scheme you want.
As for the feeding show with a pet rock, they really love the little smooth river gravel and readily eat it like popcorn.

Here's another thought. Have you ever held a baby chicken? They are nothing but fluff and gristle. Besides the fact that there isn't much nutritional value to a baby chick (a quail may be better, but...) baby chicks are really bad about carrying coccidia. If you are worried about runny poo casued by eating a chicken, just wait until your poor snake starts passing nasty stools caused by coccidiosis. In puppies and kittens, it causes a yellow, runny, foul (no pun intended or I would have said 'fowl' lol) stinknasty poo with blood and mucus in it.
You know what may be more 'fun' for you and your friends? Get a frozen/thawed rat, dangle it by its tail (preferably with tongs, but it's your hand, you choose) and dare them not to jump when the snake snatches the food. That way, your snake is safe from bites from his dinner, the rat doesn't die a slow frightening death, and you can even place bets with your friends as to who will jump and who won't. Just a thought

I agree with Giz. I am glad you are learning the hard lesson here. It would be a shame for your beautiful snake to die because a $2 rat refused to.

Barrin:
I used to do the same thing, when I first got mine...we had kill parties. We'd throw 2 rats in and take bets on which would get it first. I learned....
As far as watching things animals die...if you still want to see it, check PBS or the animal channel, they show plenty of animals killing other animals
I'm glad to see you just came out and said you were wrong and went on. A smaller person would have just gotten ticked off and left.

On the subject of "kill parties," "thrill of the hunt," etc. -- the excitement of a boa falling under the spell of the frozen/thawed "rat dance" should not be underestimated. I had a friend over today who is sort of turning over the idea of having a snake as a pet. He helped me feed the babies dead mice. They stalk them, snap at them, constrict them. He learned to make the mousies do "the dance." He learned how to get the snakes to do "the move." It's not a bad show, actually.
In fact, I think he came away a little too pleased with the whole experience. I've been trying to present the whole picture in light of the fact that the boa gets big, makes it harder to rent a place, etc. -- that they're great pets but definitely worth thinking over carefully before bringing home -- but I think he's already joined the dark side. Five of them ate for him, one of them bit him on the knuckle, and one of them fell in love with him and spent half the afternoon climbing his arm. All he took home today was a care sheet, but I think it's only a matter of time.
Anyway -- rambling now. Welcome, Barrin.

Lisa....you are my new hero very well said.
Barrin....I used alot of sarcasm to try and amplify the seriousness of the matter so maybe it would strike home. As best as I can tell you are on the path to becoming a great herper and for all the better reasons. If everyone that showed up here were experts in animal husbandry and healthcare....the site would serve little or no purpose. I hope you can understand where I was coming from and others here as well. We aren't here to drag people down to try and make us look smart or superior in any way...It's just that many or most of us share a certain code of ethics and wish to instill them upon others as they are field tested and doctor recomended many times over. I am sure that there are sites full of people just as devoted to instilling everything we are against out there. It is up to you as a responsible pet owner to weigh the evidence and think things through and make the right decisions that will make or break your pet's well being.

Hey,
Im all for keepin my Herps safe.
I saw the picks of the ball python and my friend has a ball that got his tail chewed off!
I am a conformed reptail owner and will only do the best for my pet because I fell in love with them the day I saw my first ball python at the pet store... I was so afraid to handle it but I knew as soon as I got over my fear, I would just fall in love with snakes.
I am not afraid any more (Ive had snakes for about 6 months now and got over my fear the first week) even though I still have never been biten... I duno why?
Im just lucky...but!!! I am no longer afraid of them and would do any thing for my snakes.
I dont know how many books that I 've bought on Ball python care, python care, Boa care, and the general snake books. I keep going to the local pet store here and tell them that they are hurting their snakes... or at least makin them uncomfortable... they have (no) humidity.
That is taken care of now (cuz I told the owner that he could sell more snakes if they looked good so to do that they have to shed good so now he is havin his employees spray the cages down every 2-4days.... not too much though...
the manager asked me how I knew so much and I told him that it is all info that I read out of his books that I bought there. and personal experience...
any ways ....
No dramma.
I am just glad to have a place to get new info and to share info that I know...
and to be able to hang with fellow snakelovers of the world!
oh yea,
what is the easiest way to kill the rat? Note: I dont want anny broken bones for fear of my snake gettin internally cut!
Thanks.
