Getting a baby BCC started on feeding
So I got my 3 BCC's in yesterday (1 is a year old) and the other 2 are almost 2 months old. I had to get my snakes food yesterday and while I was there I decided to get some for the new guys. I fed the yearling and he/she took it like a champ.
Now, on to the 2 babies. The male took it right when I put it in his face. Now the female, I know she had only ate about 1 or 2 times since she was born. She acts normal. I dangled some food in front of her yesterday and today, but she wouldn't take it. Most of the time she looks like she's about to take it, but she doesn't.
The temperatures are on point and so is the humidity. She's alert, and always exploring her enclosure. What do you guys think I should do? Should I wait about a week or 2 and try to feed her f/t? She didn't eat the live pinky so I just froze it. Ok, now I wanted to ask what water you give to your snakes. I give them water that is filtered in a Brita pitcher.

Re: Getting a baby BCC started on feeding
when I was trying to get the newborn babies to eat I had to leave live fuzz mice in for a few hours before they realized they were food. you might try that. a prey item that small won't hurt your babies. if not try in a week. they might need a little settle in time

Re: Getting a baby BCC started on feeding
I give my boa, Tristin, bottled water. He's a spoiled brat!
Mainly because I don't trust the well water... it develops high levels of iron or something(making running water smell weird, one of my showers tasted like blood) and has to be shocked every now and then.. SO I know that bottled water is safe.

Re: Getting a baby BCC started on feeding
Did you try leaving it in with her for a few hours? Some of my boas liked to find the food on there own.

Re: Getting a baby BCC started on feeding
Considering you just got them in yesterday, I'd wait a week? Esp. since she just refused.
Were they shipped to you or picked up locally? Esp. if shipped, they need time to de-stress... so young, new surroundings...yeah, give her time to settle!

Re: Getting a baby BCC started on feeding
Try once a week, and like Sakara said, try a live pink. Try feeding at different times of the day as well.
This might sound weird, but try "hiding" when you're feeding the snake and using the tongs to dangle the prey in front of her? So she can't see you and think you're going to eat her? lol

Re: Getting a baby BCC started on feeding
He finally ate yesterday(October 14, 2010). I say he because she ended up being a male. The breeder mis sexed him I guess. Anyway, I tried everything from braining, pinky, fuzzy, F/T, & even tried the container trick. NOTHING seemed to work until yesterday. My friend told me to try a rat pink since it's a different scent from mice and VOILA!
I put the rat pinky in there and he seemed to not be interested in it. I thought Heck nothing is working". The pinky even crawled next to him and he seemed like he didn't even notice it. After about an hour I heard the pinky squeaking away, but I didn't think anything of it. I checked on my snake 5 minutes later and I see I nice lump in his belly It was about time.

Re: Getting a baby BCC started on feeding
BCC's can be a little finicky about eating. Mine likes his privacy. I have to leave the dead rat in his hide for him to find it. Before I figured that out, he missed a lot of meals. One word of caution...don't overhandle your young BCC's. They stress easily, though they won't necessarily show it.

Re: Getting a baby BCC started on feeding
Just give it time..... place it in the cage and let the boa find it on it's own.... Try it at night and shut off the lights.... I always use f/t hoppers for neonate bcc..
I've never had a neonate bcc stop feeding and crash... But I have had some need a few weeks to get settled in before feeding...
