Hi folks, just a quick question. I haven't posted for a while as I've been away for ages. I've just got my B.C.I and Royals back from a friend who was looking after them and realised that I still have some frozen rats in a box at the back of my freezer. They've been there for 8 months. Just wondering if they're worth bining as I've heard that they lose their nutritional values after a while? How long can they be kept for??
sorry if it's a dumb question?

Not a dumb question at all!
If they are vaccuum sealed, then they may still be fresh enough to use.
If they were ziplocked or just wrapped, then it's too late as they most likely have some major freezer burn.
If that's the case, chuck'em!

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!! I've only just found this forum!

What's the score with frozen rats then?? I buy mine (about half a dozen at a time) from a pet shop and they just stick em in a bag which I take home and pop em in a small lunch type box in the freezer. Do you guys think that it would be better to get a cheap vacuum sealer? or will they be okay in the freezer for a couple of days (sometimes up to a week) in the box, the way I 'm keeping them at the mo??
I couldn't stand the thought of my pals junk food! I do enough of that for all of us
any help would be appreciated and can I just say that this site is the bomb!!!!
cheers
Jarvo

Are they already frozen when you pick them up?
If they are, then no telling how long they've been that way.
I don't know if its possible, but you could get them to either whack them freshh for you, or buy live and take home and whack them to freeze.
Or, just get a few live ones, grow a breeding colony and make your own frozen treats.

I usually feed my nile monitor frozen rat pinkies but have noticed that he wont eat the ones i bought from a merchant at a reptile show last week.
He eats on a reg basis anything i buy at the local pet store but avoids the reptile show pinkies.
Could this be a case of the too long in freezer thing?

I must admit, we've all but stopped buying frozen now as we have our own breeding colony, but when we did we often found that some of them would all but disintegrate when defrosted. Obviously been in the freezer for months, gross.
