breeding rats, y no babys?
I've been trying to breed rats for a month and a half to 2 months now. I put males in with 7 females. As far as I know from the time there impregnated to birth is about 3 to 4 weeks. I have had no luck so far. Am I doing something wrong? Or am I just to impatent?

well, from waht i have gathered, you want to make sure that the females are old enough to BE bred. and also try putting like, 2 females in with 1 male for a few days then leave them alone? ive had no problems with breeding my babies yet. i have 1 litter already and 2 more on the way SOON

Hey BrentS
I have bred rats for a while.... like sleepy said make sure they are old enough to bred....if the male isn't interested then you may try this put your main male in a cage with a separated double screen divider in the middle and another male in the opposite side once they smell each other then their testorome (sp?) level will rise a little.... once you see them at the screen trying to get at each other (smelling intently) or one more than the other.... place one of the males in with the females leave them be for about 3 hours then take it out and place the other male in the cage with the females.... if that doesn't work or if you have any questions PM me and I'll try to help you out...

I'm pretty sure there old enough to be bred. At least I think so, they seem big enough. How old do they have to be?
One of my females has been whining(lack of a better word) some when she is laying down. She seems healthy, but she will do this sometimes lately. I don't know if it is a sign or not. Is there a way to tell if they are pregnant? They don't seem larger than normal.

**EDIT NOTE** the double screens should be at least 1 1/2 inches apart so to keep them from fighting thru the screens... when the females are expecting they will get noticeably bigger..... once she has had the babies you should pull the mom and babies out of the cage and house them seperatly...

Try getting them drunk and putting the together in the back of a Camaro. It worked for a bunch of girls I went to school with.

The females should be at least 160 grams (medium to large size ... about 2 months old). The males closer to 200-220 grams.
The male should be left with the females for 10 days, this is usually sufficient to cover 2 cycles (rats come ino heat about every 7 days).
The whining can be any one of 100 things. It is usually just becuase they dont want to be bothered. The first way I can tell my females are pregnant is their stomach becomes harder. They will then start to look like a pear. Finally they will lay in odd positions around the enclosure to try and be comfortable.
Rats will control their numbers ... What size enclosure do you have the 7 females in? I use tubs that are 36"L X 24"W X 8"D. I can only keep 1 male to 4 or 5 females in that space, and I have to take out 20-30 pinks to ensure that they dont kill off babies.
Wrong temps seem to slow down or stop their breeding as well. 72-76f seem to be the ideal temp.
