While we're on the feeding ?. I got a ? for the owners of big boas. Right now my 2 columbians are pushing 7' and I'm debating rabbits. Is it safer to stick with 2 jumbos every 2 weeks or try a rabbit? If so, is it hard to get them to take a rabbit??

Capt, how big are your jumbos?
I have been doing rodentpro colossals every two weeks for my 7' girl and they seem to still leave a small lump in her belly and she is by no means a skinny girl!
This pic is a year old now but gives a rough idea of her size (I really need to get some new pics done) .....

The switch was easy.. I lost a few rabbits but my big girl is doing well on rabbits now. She would not strike them, but if I left them in her cage overnight they disappeard.

hey, just found the post..thanx. My jumbos' are the biggest rats I could get from NERD. The only rats that are bigger are the ones that run around NYC at night. It's just that these jumbo's really don't even leave a lump. I'm on one jumbo and a medium now every 2 weeks and they just go right through them like crazy. That's why I wanted a larger prey and possibly stretch out the days of feeding. I've been holding off an extra week to feed them this weekend but I'm still searching for the right food during the week. I may have to take a road trip and by more jumbos.....

Keep in mind that one appropriate sized meal item is always better (easier on digestive system) than multiple items. So it would be logical to assume that it would be safer to switch to rabbits if your snake is large enough to comfortably swallow it.

halo 2 came out?? sorry, admiring the sig. yeah, but rabbits are not the easiest to find either for the price. I need to get in touch with Kara from NERD and check her prices or if she carries them. I want to find somebody within driving distance, not ship via internet purchase...thanx for the advice.

Most of the time, even with the (very) expensive shipping costs, internet companies are cheaper in the long run if you purchase about 25 feedings worth per order. Rabbits are just expensive any way you look at it. Good luck!

I just switched my Suri (8ft,45lb) and my Retic over to rabbits a couple weeks ago. Neither one seems to like rabbit flavored rabbits, but if I thaw a few rats out with the rabbits I guess it makes the rabbits smell like a rat, and then they'll eat them. Pound for pound, rabbits are much cheaper. I was paying $2.50-$3.00 for giant rats. The rabbits are $1.00 per pound. Unfortunately the guy I get mine from only sells them in 40lb boxes. I have a big freezer so that isn't a problem for me but if you don't have a large freezer it would be. Another advantage I have is that I pick mine up at the local swap meet so I don't have to pay for shipping. I get mine from www.midwestreptile.com

hey, i think that this show might be near you: http://www.reptileexpo.com/neweng_main.htm
There are alwasy breeders of feeder rodents and rabbits so (if you want) take a look at the vendor listing (on left) and call up one of the rodent breeders. Tell them to bring rabbits to the next show and there isn't any charge on shipping.

All my Boas when i got them were rat eaters. And now all of them that are 7'+ Pound rabbits like no tomorrow. Even first try for me they went nuts over them. Actually seemed to attack them more agressivly than rats. It was quite easy for me.I get my rabbits the same place Squeezer gets his.
