Federal Anti-Herp Legislation!
Well...not sure if it's been mentioned here yet or not, but I just got word. Looks like a bill has recently been introduced to congress...not simply a request for study or info, but an actual BILL. Take a look....
H.R. 6311 Non-Native Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act:
OpenCongress - H.R.6311 Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act
Be sure to click to read "Full Bill Text." Looks like it was introduced by a Rep. Madeleine Bordallo from Guam, and is co-sponsored by 6 others from MI, FL, WI, MN, and HI.
The wording on the bill seems to indicate that once they establish an "approved list" of species that may be imported, sold, traded, etc; that any sale, distribution or even breeding of animals NOT included on their list is prohibited, INCLUDING animals that are already owned before the ban...Seems to me this bill has kind of "snuck" in under many of our noses, and it's time we get writing, try to get this thing knocked out!!!

Re: Federal Anti-Herp Legislation!
Now to see what species are on this list that they are going to release. Looks like we'll have at least 60 days to protest whatever snakes they include. Ridiculous.

America does not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She well knows that by enlisting under other banners than her own, were they even the banners of foreign independence, she would involve herself beyond the power of extrication in all the wars of interest and intrigue, of individual avarice, envy and ambition, which assume the colors and usurp the standards of freedom. – John Quincy Adams (1821)

Re: Federal Anti-Herp Legislation!
No, that wasn't actually a BILL...it was a preliminary "fact-finding" solicitation, to be used as ammunition toward a bill such as this...this bill was just introduced at the end of June, and is now in committee. Often bills die in this stage, but with as much ignorance as there is in this country about our hobby, we should NOT take the chance and sit idly by, IMHO.

UGH. I did fiind this in there though, which is good.
"(f) Animals Imported Prior to Prohibition of Importation- This Act and regulations issued under this Act shall not interfere with the ability of any person to possess an individual animal of a species that was imported legally, even if such species is later prohibited from being imported under the regulations issued under this Act"

Exactly...in effect, this bill is trying to eventually exterminate the entire herpetocultural community of whatever they put on their "list", which latest information suggests is virtually all boas and pythons in the trade.
It's worrisome.

Re: Federal Anti-Herp Legislation!
We truly cannot sit by and continue to let personal freedoms just slip away. Do we really need the Feds telling us that our 6 ft BCI is a threat to anyone/anything?...
What will they strive to regulate and control next? This big-parent government trend is such an ugly situation.

Re: Federal Anti-Herp Legislation!
You are definitely correct, Kyle. However, remember the map of the US that was put out that was half covered to show the possible range of snakes that are let loose? We all thought it was BS and discarded it. Well, the INTENT with that was not what snakes could survive NOW in those areas, but what would be possible if global warming continued....so yes, there is a potential for problem. Harsh crack down? No. Strict regulation in the more southern states? Sure. FEDERAL law? Unnecessary.

Re: Federal Anti-Herp Legislation!
The really sad thing is, this may never have come about if only people put a little time and effort into researching their pets before they got one.

Re: Federal Anti-Herp Legislation!
I wanna move to Australia. How are things over there? I'm tired of paying taxes out the wazoo only for someone to go stand in a line to get the money I'm earning. I'm tired of all the bans, restrictions, regulations, political correctness. All that crap. You know, things were good in the 50's. We need to simplify.
