what bothers me is there is no more steve irwin to show people that snakes are not evil killing machines but there will still be these horror stories. the herp world is gonna take a lot of steps backwards.

I knew Patrick very well. His whole family are some of the nicest people I know. Patrick was passionate about reptiles in general and particularly retics.
My wife Michelle spoke with Patrick on Sunday about that snake. It was a female retic, and she had minor mouth rot. Michelle gave him some advice on how to treat the problem. She and I have both told him personally in the past about our personal 6' rule (for every 6' of snake requres 1 person, so a 14' snake would have requred 3 people if it were us). We have cautioned him about how strong these snakes are, but he aparantly didn't listen.
Michelle has been almost in shock over this and I haven't been much better.
I feel for his family most of all. They are great people, and the certainly don't deserve any criticism.
If you are of the religious persuasion, please pray for the Von Allmen family.

We will pray for his family!! I dont think this is much of a criticism but more, a reality check and reminder for all of us as to not lose perspective as to how powerful these creatures really are..... again my thoughts are with the family...

Morti, thank you for replying and clarifying a number of points.
My thoughts an prayers are with Patrick's family.
Anything I have said is not intended as a bash to patrick or his family, but as already stated...I pray that his death was not in vain. I pray that people will learn from his death, that proper handling should always be exercised.
RIP Patrick.
