Its been a while since I've been on, but I cant let my first litter ever come without posting up pics. If I'd had any hair left I would have been pulling it out for sure, momma seemed to make it a point of contradicting all the normal indicators and milestones along the way. No P.O.S., faking me out with certain behaviors, delivering two weeks "late". She ended up making it through just fine. The ratio left a bit to be desired, but she gave us four nice looking babies, one nice looking still born normal, and 11ish slugs. When she was approaching her due date, she wasn't as large as I thought she would be; so I had her checked out and x-ray'd. We counted 15 slugs, and what I thought were eight babies. Turns out three of those were feces, and not nicely patterned babies. lol. I think some of the slugs broke open leading me to only count eleven, but I hadn't considered that at the time, got scared about retention, and had her x-ray'd again. Anyway, enjoy the pics, I'm interested to hear opinions on the babies. I'm trying to keep an even keel here, but I'm really pleased with how they turned out being a first timer.

Scarface-Almandine
First up is the Scarface-Almandine pair. Both parents were born in 2008, and neither has had a litter before. The female weighed 2382 grams at the start of the season.

Successful Date Night (November)


Progress so far is as follows:

1109 Introductions
1111 Shared hide, clear tail wrap. Scarface wastes no time!
1117 Shared hide, intertwined but no clear wrap
0111 Shared hide, probable wrap
0119 Scattered urates, but unsure which female left them
0412 Almandine begins lying on heat

Looking Plump (April)


As of now, Almandine has been on the heat for almost six weeks. Her weight has hit 2491, an increase of over 100 grams, and she looks chunky. She hesitated before feeding at her last meal, which is unusual for her. Status: very likely gravid.


Scarface-Onyx
Second up is the Scarface-Onyx pair. Both parents were born in 2008, and neither has had a litter before. The female weighed 2240 grams at the start of the season.

Sperm Plug (January)


Progress so far is as follows:

1116 Introductions, one week later than the first female
0113 First shared hide, contact unclear
0119 Scattered urates, but unsure which female left them
0121 Shared water bowl, he actively seeking lock
0128 Shared water bowl
0129 Sperm plugs in water bowl
0211 Courting behavior from the male – following her, rubbing his head on her, etc.

There was additional hide and water sharing several times, but no confirmed locks that I witnessed.

Shared Water (January)


On the plus side, Onyx recently moved to the hide and settled on the side near the heat. She also looked chubby during the last weekly cleaning, and is with a male that provably knows what to do. On the negative side, her weight has fallen slightly to 2198 grams, which is a very slight loss (less than two percent). She is also still feeding. Status: uncertain.


We will pick up next week with pairs three and four.

This was obviously a sad event, but the silver lining is that the surviving babies are awesome.

Despite giving birth on the 105th day after her POS, only a single baby was in an amniotic sac. Most of the cords where already retracting when they were born. No yolks. No chubby bellies. These babies were just in the oven too long.

For those of you with Sterling aspirations, availability will be very limited this year. Next season is coming!

And I asked him "Is this essential?" and he said "Yes."

So I asked him again "Boas too?" and he also said "Yes."

But another employee at the farm said "It is not essential to boas.

They breed well whether cooling or not cooling."

Well, maybe Mr.Dan is the big shot but his major is geckos and amphibians

and another employee's major is colurbrids and small lizards.

And here in Korea, I didn't heard any breeders who use cooling for mating

their boas. It just make me confuse again since that probing matter

(and it turns out that the vet is wrong. Hope you don't mind me throwing a bunch of questions at you.. I've got a yellow Saharan Uro who I'm planning on building a new enclosure for. Dimensions will likely be 36"L x 15" W x 18"H. I've knocked together stands for aquariums before, but this is my first time actually building something to house one of my little pals.

1) I initially thought I was going to use melamine, however, upon researching some more, I saw a lot of people recommending against it in favour of plywood (well-sealed, of course). Some cons of melamine seemed to be that it made for a very heavy enclosure, and some people argued it didn't stand up to long-term use as well as, say, cabinet-quality birch or maple. What would you use? And what thickness - 1/2" or 3/4"?

2) I'd like to rig up my lights inside the tank itself to make everything a little cleaner and more streamlined. UVB is no problem, I know exactly how I want to do that, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little concerned about the heat lamps. What's the risk for wiring your fixtures and mounting them inside the enclosure? Obviously they need to be out of reach of the animal, of course. Is there a fire concern with the high heat produced by the bulb with regards to the wood? I was also planning on doing a homemade fake-rock styrofoam background, should I be concerned about the light's proximity to that? And while I obviously don't need to worry about high humidity for my Uro, just for curiosity's sake, would in-tank bulbs be a definite no with herps that require high humidity? I just can't see heavily misting an enclosure with bare exposed bulbs in there.
