I used to have one. A good friend of mine has him now. They are cool little things to have around, I just didn't have the time for him back them, but I wouldn't mind having another one.

We had two little guys for a while.. They were awesome.. Loved watching them do their little happy ferret jumpy dance every time we let them out of their cage. Only things I didnt like was the smell, and all the noise they make when they want attention. Ended up giving them to a good friend because I didnt have the time for them.
Overall, they are pretty good pets.

I have 3. To be honest I don't have time for them but one is a rescue and he would have to go to a very good home. I don't want to see him going back to what he had before. That is the only reason I still have them. As for the smell, the more you bathe them, the more they smell. The bath makes more oil which is what smells. Just keep there cage clean and wash there bedding. The musk smell on them will die down after awhile without a bath. They are like cats and will clean themselves.

They make excellent mousers...and taste like chicken!!
(just kidding about the chicken part...they're a little more gamey than that)

I agree with D. The more you bath them, the more they smell. I don't bathe mine, and they don't smell much at all. Another thing. Don't cover the bottom of their cage with bedding amterial. This holds in the smell also. I just give mine a iltter box, which they use, and some of those little pouches for ferrets to sleep in on the upper levels. They are smart animals, I have 2, and they both come when you call them by name. I love these guys, next to snakes, best pets I ever had. Oh yeah, they love to go outside, I have peashes and harnesses, and a cloth bag made for them that goes around my shoulder. Whne they get tired, they go in the bag and sleep for awhile

I have five. They really shouldn't get baths more than once a month or so. They have pretty sensitive skin and it will dry out and give them itchy spots. Not to mention, it will encourage the production of skin oils like others said and it can make them smell worse. Good diet, clean sleeping area, and a clean potty area will go MUCH further to make them smell better.
They are a riot though. When all five of them get to going my cats just give them a wide berth.

Natas used to have 2 ferrets (Princess and Zoe), they were adorable! Stinky and cute! They were hilarious - they would run sideways up the stairs. Be careful, they can get in tight little spaces, and they also hide stuff from you, IE keys, etc.
They are a fun little pet to have a round!

I had two, Double and Trouble. Great fun. They weren't caged, had the run of the house and I kept kitty litter for them to use. A high backed pan, they squirt!
Other than the usual kitty litter stink, I never noticed a bad smell on them. But I note from reading the thread, that is probably because I never bathed them, it didn't cross my mind to do so. Like my cats, they kept themselves clean.
Great fun, but had a habit of hiding food in all the wrong places. :P

Unfortunately everyone in my home, but me, is allergic to the furry animals. We have a dog but she is an outdoor dog and only comes into the garage to sleep in her house/crate.
I had a couple a while ago before the kids and they were a riot. Never caged them. They had the run of the apartment and always used the litter pan (mostly).
But the smell issue is as everyone else said, wash less, less smell.
Like was said they are better mouser then cats! But watch out for your small snakes and lizards, cause if they get out the ferrets will devour them too!

I had five and still have one left.
They were all descented and fixed when I bought them so in my opinion they never smelled...I bathed them as needed...usually about every 2-3 weeks.
As they get older and get around less I bath them less. They are GREAT pets...sweet and easy to train. VERY smart. Wouldn't hurt a fly....I use marshall farms food and a few others over the years. They LOVE raisens , icecream (don't give them more then a taste one in a great while)and bannanas. Give her a hammok and a pillowccase to sleep in they love stuff to burrow into and sleep under.
Good luck, Nice choice

A good friend of mine breeds them locally here in town and he's made a name for himself when it comes to the lil buggers. I have thought about getting one but when I went to his new years party last year and went into his facility he's built in his back yard I about died with the smell. He has about 20 of em that are his and he does take good care of em. I would over all say they are great pets and have funny personalities, but I wouldn't get one just for the shear fact of how bad they can smell if you don't keep up with their hygene and thier cage.

if the ferret has a tattoo on it's ear it comes from Marshall Farms and has had both surguries done prior to sale to any facility or petstore...this does cut down on the smell.
Males who have not been fixed will STINK---females who have not been fixed will DIE unless you breed them---and any ferret with it's scent glands intact will stink too.

oh yeah and I forgot:
when ferrets are babies it's natural for them to bite you a little too hard when playing. This is because they are used to playing with their litter mates who have very thick skin.
I had to train any baby ferret to not bite so hard by actually yelling out in pain when they hurt me little...they get the message fairly quickly to be gentler with humans.
