Well, I just bought a pair of Sugar Gliders today. '98 Female and '01 Male. The guy from http://www.njreptiles.com isn't going to go further with his breeding program for his mammels, so he was selling 5pairs of gliders . I got a pair + cage + hidebox for $125. Although, I bought a brand new cage for them anyway and other various toys.I read up on them a lot and decided this will be my last purchase of any sort of animal. I was just wondering what you guys feed your gliders. I forgot to ask Craig(owner) what he was feeding them at the time, but I'll e-mail him or go in tomorrow to ask, but I was just wondering what you guys feed your gliders.
Oh, and what do you use for bedding for the bottom of the cage?
Pictures will come when everything is all settled in.

G'day Kevin,
In the wild these animals eat nectar, tree sap, and the
occasional insect.
In captivity they can be given a variety of sweet soft fruits,
honeydew melon, rockmelon, kiwi fruit, pears, papaya etc.
They should also be given a mixture containing supplements
very similar toLorikeet mix, you may even be able to use the
Lori mix, but check with the other guys here as to what sort
of products you have available over there.

hey again!
Well, the owner of the shopped e-mailed me last night and said "Dry cat food is always available, with fresh fruit offered in the eve.. Leftover fruit is removed in AM.
More on diet here: http://www.pygmypets.com/sg6.html"
I just went out and bought a bunch of fruits/veggies and cat food. As for the first night with my gliders, it was an experience. They were doing flips and eating from my hands through the cage.
I'd still like to know what bedding to use?
How would you go about taming them?
Do you think it's going to be hard to bond with them seeing how they are quite old now?(Hopefully not, because I'd really like to play with them)
here's a picture

Cat food is also under everything. Is this good diet or should I have done it different?

Looks fine to me Kevin, possibly dice the
fruit and veg up very small, half or even quater that size.
Go easy on the cat food ,maybe get a nice fat grass hopper
for them now and then.

okie cool, How about taming them? They seem to not be scared of me when I'm looking at them and they take food from me through the cage.

Well the animals I worked with Kevin, were in
a wildlife park situation. Large outdoor cages,
leaf mulch for substrate and 'taming ' them didn't
really come into it.
So those questions I'll leave to someone who has kept
them as 'pets'.
Ravnos I think may be able to help you.?

exotic nutritions is what i fed my glider since i got it as a baby for my mom as a baby(ex-business partners cat killed her rip josie)had really good luck with it along with fruits veggies super mealies and crickets(she loved her mealies)supposedly exotic nutritions diets are supposed to be better then what the zoo's feed there gliders but who knows.....thats another option to try i cant remember the sites but there was a few that listed the exact ingredients that each zoo puts in there glider diets (if i remember correctly i had a lot of luck with the one containing large ammounts of egg)
good luck with the breeding!!

Well, the guy and his wife from www.njreptiles.com (he also has a stored located by me) was doing a breeding project w/ them and is now moving onto something different and is selling all his gliders. I'm pretty sure he didn't play with them because he said they aren't friendly yet, but hopefully I can change that
Thanks for all the help!

Generally Gliders need a wide variety of food. Just PM me and i can send you a good list but it's something this.
Various fruits: really just about anything, jsut not much orange, it is not good for them.
Frozen veggies
Protein: This can be received generally from I think it's called nutra grain cat food (it's about 35 bucks a bag but lasts forever). Also monkey biscuits can be purchased from generally any feeders supply.
They also need some bread with honey on it from time to time.
Also be sure to coat their food with calcium powder, calcium is essential to their diet and without it they will more than likely die.
Glideraide is also a nutritional supplement that you should be giving them at least every other feeding. Just as with calcium powder we generally jsut sprinkle it over the food.
Also they need some protein, this can be acheieved by cooked unseasoned chicken, cooked beef, bugs and berries supplement or just plain mealworms.
Generally we give ours a mixture of the fruit and veggies every night supplemented with mealies, calcium and glideraide. Everything else we jsut be sure to give them at least once a week.

I don't think a gliders gut is designed to process the starches and preservatives
found in bread, and grain isn't part of their natural diet.
I would avoid giving it to them.

Any place online I can order the calcium and glideraide on the same site?
Can someone also tell me a good book on gliders?

Hey Kevin, I wish you the best of luck with your new pets. Looks like everyone here has some great advice for you, and you seem plenty willing to do what's necessary to care for them. There is one thing that bothers me though, and I don't want this to come out wrong or turn into flame or anything, but I would much rather have seen this as a "I'm considering getting Sugar Gliders, what do I need to know?" type post than a "I just got a Sugar Glider--what do I feed it and where can I find out more about them" post. But then, I would still rather see a "I just got a Sugar Glider--what do I feed it and where can I find out more about them" post than to see nothing and have the animal suffer. Our hobby as a whole, whether Sugar Gliders or Iguanas or Burmese Pythons, suffers as a result of people not fully researching before they get their pet. I was guilty of it with my first snake. What I'm trying to say is, thanks for coming and looking for advice, please consider looking into this sort of thing ahead of time in the future.
I sure hope that came out right...

I understand where you are coming from, but I did research before I bought them. I'm never going to be almost certain on what to do, so I tend to ask questions. I usually have an idea, but I want to make sure it's good before I get it. The guy only had 5 pairs and he was selling 3 the day I got mine, which most likely the next day the other 2 pairs would of been gone. It was really a now or never situation. I also have 1 hamster, 2 bearded dragons, 2 leapord geckos, 1 cali king and 1 gopher snake so it's not like I don't know what responsibility is when it comes to buying a animal. I just saw the opportunity and took it before it was to late for me.
I appreciate your concern though
anyhow, they seem to be doing fine and they seem to be doing there thing.

Well, I bought..
* GLIDERADE 24 OZ. SIZE (00044) .......... $ 17.95 x 1 = $ 17.95
* MONKEY BISCUIT 14 OZ. SIZE (1077733) .......... $ 4.25 x 1 = $ 4.25
* REP-CAL with Vitamin D-3 (000061) .......... $ 5.49 x 1 = $ 5.49
My male seems to love meal worms (hand fed through cage). He nipped my hand through the cage getting the mealworm(wow his claws are sharp and long). Still littled skeptical weather they will be tamed enough to even touch. I really hope they become calm enough for me to hold and everything, but if not, I'll still treat them with as much love if I was able to hold them. What does the hissing type noise mean? They seem to do that and chase each other round.
If I get a pouch for them would I be able to put them in it in the morning and bond with them? or is it to soon for that. I've been reading and it says
<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE> Playing with them whilst sleepy and bribing them shamelesly with favourite foods are all good ways to start the bonding process </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>
